2 pointsit's interesting, in the 60's and 70's it was pretty much 'mind how you go'. Nobody will argue that alcohol - in increasing quantities - does impair judgement and performance behind the wheel. Until just over a year ago, our limit allowed a certain amount of impairment. There was no reporting or evidence to suggest that many accidents were caused by people driving in the region of the old limit - that is, above our new limit, and below our old limit. There was certainly much coverage of recidivist offenders driving at multiple times the (old) limit. And many accidents indicating a major contributing factor was impairment well over the (old) limit. What they have done, is used an elephant gun to kill a mouse. They've legislated to make you and I - or your neighbour, or your workmate - criminals. We used to enjoy two - perhaps three - glasses after work, perhaps with some food, and drive carefully home. Or not! Now, in the same circumstances, we're all criminals driving at that level of 'impairment'. What has changed? Has this reduced the number of recidivist offenders, or the road toll? The f#cking idiots who were driving pissed before, are still over the limit. Me? I take an Uber, or walk. I didn't have accidents as a result of responsibly driving with three beers after work. How great was the risk that this law change was designed to manage?

2 pointsI've not made any attempt to contact the other party involved, either her directly or her husband who's number was provided to me. This morning, I have received a call from their insurer. I explained the situation, and the representative said "I assume you're not admitting liability?" Lol. He asked if could email me, asking if I would respond with details of what happened. I duly received his email: "Thank you for speaking with me today. As discuss can you please provide a statement and diagram of the vehicle incident? Please draw basic pictures to show where the vehicles were and how they came to hit each other with a brief description," No problem. I'm happy to do that. I replied: "I’ll get some details and a description sorted for you. It may take a day or so. Be assured I most certainly am NOT admitting any liability!" I anticipated that would be it until I had sent through the details, but the insurance rep responded: "Thank you for your reply, no worries if it takes a day or so. And yes, definitely understand you are not liable for the damage." This is verbatim - I've not edited for grammar, punctuation or anything.

1 pointMore than 8000 drink-drivers were nabbed in the first year of New Zealand's lower alcohol law. The 8000 caught by police would have been legally under the limit before tougher legislation came into force in 2014. and didn't we just have the highest roadtoll in ages and we now also have way more options to avoid the driving with UBER and the increased bus and train routes etc I guess you could argue that they are falling in line with overseas trends but i get annoyed with their logic National road policing manager Superintendent Steve Greally told NZME he believes the new legislation is working. "That is extremely encouraging for the long-term. "It seems like Kiwis are doing a great job of taking drink-driving more seriously," Greally said. Alcohol is responsible for around 27 per cent of crashes Wow How do they know, I would agree it was possibly a contributing factor but tiredness which caused the lack of concentration is the unknown,I guess alcohol exagerates a persons tiredness. I would argue those that crash are so far over the limit that the limit is arbitrary. We have so many multiple offenders that are 3x the limit if it really was 27% there would have to have been a lower road toll, the whole logic makes no sense https://nz.news.yahoo.com/top-stories/a/30526660/new-alcohol-limit-nabs-8000-drivers/

1 pointSo got the V8 on Friday, and wiring loom. I must admit, this was a little tricky to remove as there was always one more cable, pipe or bracket still connecting the engine to the car, but it came out in the end. Still busy with the wiring, will be removing at least half of this mess and then make it all pretty again to stick into Rusta. Hoping to get the car in the garage this weekend and have the engine in place for the custom engine mounts to be made up and also take measurements for the drive shaft etc

1 pointYes it will be but that might not be for a couple months. Need to sort and get rid of some other cars first. EDIT: Punctual errors.
-
1 pointThat is correct. We had it open for a while, we begged and pledded with people to resize their images. People didnt so we put the limits in place to stop our more internet challenged people from posting direct from their smart phones without doing some sort of resize and compression first. The limits will remain as the problem of camera image sizes has gotten a lot worse. The other option is a automated script that can run across images to resize them. But this brings other issues.

1 pointIt's catering for the lowest common denominator, again. Those who simply cannot handle a couple of beers, and those that think they are invincible, and/or "drive better" with a couple of beers inside them. Make drink driving an imprisonable offence, with (say) 2 days for being over the limit, increasing 2 days at a time as the level of alcohol rises. The offending individual will serve this time between Friday evening and Sunday evening, doing something useful while being detained.

1 pointE30 320 stanced as with stretched tyres and mad camber. Threw up a lil, poor car.

1 pointHopefully Ron (3 Pedals) will be along shortly. I discussed this (what's an X5 like to run; what are the areas of concern) recently with my local independent; expect in the region of $2k/year maintenance, and be prepared for the occasional big (up to $5k) year. Not an inexpensive car to run. I like the idea of a diesel. I'm not game for this much risk, though. Need to qualify further, and am pleased you're asking these questions on your thread. Re autos, I think this applies to all BMW autos. Lifetime fluid is a crock; fluid and filter changes are essential to maintain the transmissions. HTH Olaf

1 pointSomething about them screams Mercedes to me, however they're extremely nice. Good choice.

1 pointWhat? Child seat goes in the boot? Guess it's one way to cut down on cabin noise, those crazy germans... Which will be the only four boits left in the car after everything rattles off... Just dip it in a sikaflex/loctite shandy, that'll keep everything together!

1 pointBest place to get a new key? I've lost my only key unfortunately. Not sure how much this will cost me, are these programmed to the car specifically? I never had to use mine for anything electrical, just mechanical open door and start etc... 1997 e39 540i

1 pointYou still need to clear fault codes & adaptions. Possibly also reset idle speed. I would also check unmetered air ie: crank breather hose from the rocker cover to the PCV valve which should also be checked... a back fire (lean mixture) can damage a new MAF (is it new or 2nd hand?). What is the idle Kg reading and full load reading from your new MAF ?

1 pointGreat to hear you got this sorted finally Bernie. But it high lights yet again the risks one takes in trying to self diagnose a modern car packed full of electronic stuff. As Grant posted very diplomatic I feel and Glenn has been saying for years "get it scanned' rings true every time plus the PM graham sent you. Nobody on here likes to see these problems escalate and cost more $$$ and time than need be hence we help one another as best we can. Enough said go and enjoy driving you car 2 cents worth.

1 pointUnderstood. And apologies if my PM may have seemed a little blunt... I was confident you weren't incompetent, but didn't know how far your skills might extend. Great to hear you're sorted.
-
1 pointwell guys I have sorted it. As I thought, it was the maf. Glenn's comment about the egs getting signal from maf pretty much confirmed it for me. Along with the error codes (which do seem to have been spot on, and do reinforce what Glenn said) I put new maf in this morning and BOOM- trans light gone and gear shifts are great. So thanks heaps for all the imput peeps (esp you Glenn.I will surely use your services if I do get really stuck in the future) I am a muppet for possibly fckng the maf in the first place, but I was making sure I did the research as to diagnose myself and to only get help when and if I needed. I dont have the cash to pay for mechanics etc, and have always done things myself. Being a boatbuider I kinda do have some sort of clue as the trade itself is really a few different trades combined.. Anyway, thanks again and happy new year fellow beemer heads..

1 pointI agree. Would you operate a skill saw, grinder or lathe after having a few beers? I know I wouldn't Driving a car is even worse. I personally would like to see a nil alcohol limit, like in Japan and other countries. Taxis and other services would have to become way more competitive to meet the demands I suspect.
-
1 pointI dont care what the story is when it comes to drink driving, absolutely anything they can do to get drink drivers off the road is a win in my book.

1 pointCant think why they are handed, on the E39 at least. The wipers orintation are the same for left or right hand drive. They are biased to left hand market but the drivers arm is on an elongated cam arrangement so that it extends further into the corner of the screen. Unlike earlier cars where worked opposite for each market.
-
1 pointbut if they were doing 6kph less, they wouldve stayed in their side of the road, and lived! Geez, its not that hard!
