Update #21 Been meaning to post an update for a while, but have kept putting it off.. In August last year my son was born, at two and a half weeks old he was rushed to Starship and after a week of tests was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition. As a result of the condition he has liver disease and we've spent the last year in and out of Starship (more in than out for most of the year). Its been pretty hard on my wife and I, several times in the last year things have looked pretty grim, the last couple of months have been a bit quieter and we're hoping that that continues for a while. Progress on the car has obviously been non-existent as a result. I haven't had much opportunity to drive it (apart from some trips to and from hospital), it's ticked over about 2000km since I did the rod bearings. I dropped by Auckland City BMW a couple of weekends ago and picked up oil and filter ready for a change. I'll post here when I do. Excitingly though we're in the process of buying a house (cause we haven't had enough excitement for the year), which means that the car will hopefully be garaged in the near future (hooray!). Which means that I can start getting onto the cosmetic side of things, which I've been intentionally ignoring while the car was somewhat exposed to the elements. I haven't planned in detail, but a rough list of things to do are (no particular order other than mechanical being higher priority than cosmetic): Structural Foam in front RACP mounts. Mechanical fan replacement. Water pump replacement. Attempt to get to and clean the ICV without breaking the little clip on the SMG reservoir. Remove the additional trailer connector wiring in the boot. Replace the plastic bits on the bonnet and the plastic weatherstrip at the bottom of the windscreen. Replace the side indicator enclosures with new ones that aren't UV damaged. Replace the weather trim on the B Pillar exteriors. Re-align driver's side door. Re-align and plastic weld front bumper. Re-align and plastic weld rear bumper where it's been attacked to make e-bay diffuser fit. Replace said e-bay diffuser with OE. Remove window tinting now that the car will be garaged (looking forward to being able to see when reversing at night). Inspect the underbody restoration work done a year ago and make sure all is well. Hopefully its not so long to the next update!

Nowhere to use them really... the plastic expanding rivets are probably best for where I have them, they're not load bearing and the holes are smaller than nutserts would require. I'm tending that way also (although I broke those velocity splitters so would need to get more) but the big win here is the potential to make a mould and now that it's secure we also know how to mount it properly. Now, if it were raw carbon fibre with no gaps I'd certainly prefer it for show/meet type events. In the end I got this for a good price and as a bit of an experiment. I'm pretty confident I could sell it for what I paid for it to somebody that wants one. Especially now that fitting is secure. I suspect it would be great at the track and only takes 5 mins to fit after the extra holes are drilled in the factory bumper (4 of them).

Crikey. A 7 (7!!!) year old car committing seppuku like this... Why oh why do people buy them? No disrespect to the owner here, but the horror stories must surely be well known by now. Inadequate maintenance was mentioned before in reference to a different engine, I think we can all accept by now this series of engine is going to explode no matter how it is treated. Makes it embarrassing to be a BMW nut sometimes.

Thought I'd share today's arrival, very exciting times! Karbonius CSL Air intake - Box, Snorkel. Have decided to go with carbon fiber trumpets over OEM plastic trumpets. Carbon Fiber M3 GTR Style Vented Bonnet. Hi every everyone. I’ve had the 320d for over yr now. I enjoy this car and drive it hard. It is not real straight but relatively low iks at 175,000 and is the 2003 pre facelift model and has a tidy interior. I’ve not done the swirl flaps, and wonder it I really need to, or if I do, can I do it myself, and what is the best method. i have previously owed a 1980 633 and and early very tidy 520 with the 4cly engine. Also interested in mapping but not if it going to cost to much or if I’m told it’s not worth it. Car has some turbo lag. I have cleaned out the ERG valve about 10000ks ago and I always use a quality fuel treatment to ensure a clean running engine and to reduce/prevent carbon build up. I like the manual 5sp but could be tempted with a 330d auto.

Looks cleaner without the lip. Especially with a gap it's just 2 separate components rather than 3. Plus it won't be as low. Now if it was body coloured that'd be the dog's bollocks. Of course, probably not worth painting with the current finish.

Good day out on the weekend, 7th fastest out of 37. Also ordered a Haltech 2500 ECU today and have been looking at building a high compression M52b28 with M54 cams or stronger and new pistons in increase compression

Installed the splitter today in a secure, drivable fashion. I installed it without the factory lip this time and it still has gaps, they're the same with or without the factory lip. A casual observer wouldn't really notice them but any enthusiast would. If we are able to make a mould you'd remove the gaps at that stage I'd think. It's secured at 7 points now, three at the front, two at the rear and I used two plastic expanding rivets to close and keep the sides in. It's not going anywhere unless I hit something. All of the extra holes I drilled into the bumper are either out of sight underneath or covered by the factory lip when that's installed. Standoffs Expanding rivets Gaps

Won't be me after all. Needed a daily to replace the 520i e39 and Mrs would rather an auto so picked up a black 2000 328i Msport 157000km for 3k from an ex BMW tech in Botany who had done heaps to it including rear subframe reinforcing. Got to get rid of 3 vehicles before resuming the search for the elusive manual . . . . GLWS

April 2017. The era of Gymkhanas had come to a close and it was time to sell the trusty STi. unbeknownst to the flat-4, my eyes set elsewhere. She was sleek, Italian, two wheels, absolutely insane, and I needed one. As 2017 progressed, my love affair took the form of two Italian two-stroke sports bikes, both of which exhilarated me, but as the months started to pass, I began to worry more and more about firing them off a cliff and not coming home. I remembered the thousands of kilometers i spent with my various cars, pushing each one and loving every second of it. I yearned for long twisty mountain runs, I desired the roar of high displacement engines, I missed air-conditioning. So I began the search, my requirements were simple; lightweight, high grip, and cheap to modify. This led me down the route of something akin to a Type R Integra, then my partner one day surprised me with his DC5-R, so it was back to the drawing board. Should I conform and get some filthy skyline? Or perhaps sink all my funds into the 80's mr2 sitting around the back and embrace being forever poor? Then one day, my landlord visited in his E92 M3. AND HE GAVE ME THE KEYS. I knew I could never afford an E92, but just as every car enthusiast should know, I too was very aware of her older, slightly unhinged sister. What I wasn't aware of, was how affordable they really were. A deep blue one popped up. I and the landlord went out and had a look. She was nice, but not worth the asking, then a yellow one popped up. Cheap, but had a very sketchy history. About 4 months later, just as i had given up and started looking for some RFB stickers, SHE popped up. and my goodness, was she something. I didn't hesitate, I contacted her owner and booked an inspection. YES! she passed with flying colours! Ok then, better tell the boss i'm not going to be in on Friday. Why? Because i'm about to make the biggest decision in my millennial life! The plane landed and i stepped out of the shoebox of an airport. There she was. It was like i'd waited a lifetime to see an old friend. My eyes tinted rose. She really was as beautiful as they said. It took the whole of 80 minutes before her owner reluctantly handed me the keys, making me promise that should I ever decide to sell her, to get in touch with him first. If you made it through that essay of a write up, then congratulations! After the 7.5hr drive back to Auckland and consequent de-bugging, she's now settling into her new home. The whole household have made her very welcome! As have the small handful of friends she's already surprised! So without further Adieu, here she is! Imola red Manual 145000ks Fully documented and thorough servicing history, with photographed works including the vanos refresh about 30000ks back. Aside from the K&N filter and Eibach lowering springs, Completely original (even talked him into including the OEM bits!) I absolutely cannot wait to meet everyone and start taking her out. She does need a new set of tyres and brake pads, but really whats that in the grand scheme of things!!

A link to make it easier for people to find... https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1647326462 That looks to be a South Island E30 Series car, so it's not one that I am familiar with, but from the photos it looks to be in a very tidy condition. For me the most important things in a race car are the safety equipment, should you ever need it you want it to be good, so I would be looking at the quality of the fabrication and design of the cage (it runs through to the front struts which is a good start), the seat and it's installation and the harness installation. Is it a competitive car, what sort of results has it had in the past? Any big accidents, a bit of panel damage is pretty much the norm, but a serious shunt is hard to fully fix. Miscallenous bits and pieces, more for the value equation of the deal rather than its the right car, would be what spares are included, how much life is left in the wear and tear item - tyres, brakes, etc. The E30 Series Car is a great place to start, not expensive to maintain (by race car standards) engine and gearbox are pretty reliable as they are not highly tuned. Handling package is good, and the car is not massively powerful enough to be a handful, but still enough to get you into trouble / fun depending on your view!

You need a few right angle tools do clean out the crap and you also need a clean surface for the "O" rings to seal properly with a little locktite master gasket. It is a very easy job when you have done a few and have the right gear. There is nothing wrong with the part you have purchased. I have used hundreds of those.

come to think of it, I regularly play all of the above - with the exception of The Mission. Perhaps I need to add a little purple to my wardrobe. And buy this M3.
