Mitch and I connected. He's looking to get his dads car back. Very noble of him! @m325i here's another (my other) red car you should own/drive:

Necroposting! Yeah, she's my baby. I had it repainted, and some work done (Camshaft grind, valves, polishing of Conrods, lightened Crankshaft & Flywheel, polished Cyl Head, Face & Cut Valve Seats, Bore Block, Oil Pump, New Pistons, Rockers, main & big end bearings, Clutch Set, Motec M48). Yes, unfortunately it sits (securely) in storage, and oddly I can't find a more recent picture than 2007 1st photo is after re-spray and when it went into storage. (back when taking photos was hard). The colour looks better in person. 2nd photo is pre-respray.

I never really got the whole Alpina thing, I know some covert them, but for me an M car is more desirable and more saleable when I want to move on. Plus you have to explain to most people what an Alpina is and if you dont like the Alpina wheels, which I dont, then the rest is just a different take on luxury, not better in my eyes but again those that love Alpina will see it differently.

Hi @IainR Sorry I'm a bit slow on the uptake on this one, that might have been me? The covid tracer app has made itself useful I was at Mitre 10 about 2:15pm on the 28th. I think I was parked against the wall near the entrance? My 130 has what look like style 261's but they aren't BMW rims. They were on it when I purchased it and don't really have any identifying marks so I'm not sure exactly what brand or model they are TBH.

Latest M5 update includes branding my calf muscle with a distinctive exhaust tip...... I was getting a 30 pack of carbonated beverage out of the boot, summer, shorts, jandals, got a tad close to the passenger side tips when reaching in and boom - nice semi circular brand on my leg. It was definitely a WTF the is that pain, and who is burning a barbershop down moment. I was stunned and then pissed myself laughing followed by some pain and immediately thought I have to tell someone about this

So its around GBP35k in the UK, $68k here. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=price-asc&postcode=ll652yh&radius=1500&make=BMW&model=Alpina D3&include-delivery-option=on&price-from=500&year-from=2016&minimum-badge-engine-size=3.0 With Import Duty and GST, lets say around $80k here, landed. He wants a 50% uplift on that actual cost and thats not even a fair comparison as in the UK it had a 12x larger market, a market that likes/liked/incentivised diesels and a more affluent market. Its a hard sell in NZ on all levels. "Yes. A very attractive price given the original cost and the cost to bring one of similar age and mileage for offshore today. Try ordering one from the Australian Alpina agent. " Right. The "original cost" has little to do with the current cost on a rapidly depreciating asset like a car. Given its still valuable but that pitch and price makes him look foolish/toolish. Though he only needs one buyer.

Listed at 20k. Not sure what the displacement is but considering prices nowadays and if they’re honest about the rust, not a bad buy for 20k.

Last night on a motorway detour up Onewa Rd, saw a nice red Mtech2 E30 followed by what sounded like a fire-breathing e36 coupe.. although there was some rice around too so the sound may not have been bmw.

Smoke test needs to be pressurized...or you have to pressurize your intake tract. I cooked up something following some DIYs elsewhere two plastic caps that go over my inlet pipes. One of them has a connection to my air compressor. I compress up the entire intake tract to about 16 psi (the seal around the caps themselves gives up at that point. You can see it working as the 'bellows' on the inlet pipes expand out . that said it's not fool proof as you might be running more than 16psi (but not stock! 8psi). Very poor a garage missed a clear and common boost leak...cracked charge pipe is one of the most , if not the most common N54 boost leaks.

Runflats, on the X5, probably 50/50 city/country, they’ll only last 18,000km anyway. They felt quite dry if that makes sense. I’m leaning no, not enough discount to try.

We pulled a Haines V198 that was 1905kg dry on the trailer once with an e36 320i auto. Can’t remember how much fuel it had in it, but it was a 200l tank. Probably wouldn’t do it again.

Yeeeaaauuuuuurrrp Here are the bank 2 headers finish welded apart from the flanges. Not sure how I am going to rectify the distortion caused by the welding just yet ... a real bummer and something the experienced header builder would expect. Should have build and welded one or two sections as I went. Still, they look good in a picture

I refurbed them. Started with some stripper but the 40 Yr old paint was too stubborn. So, I had a mate media blast them. Then I went to spray them but as soon as I opened my primer, it all started to set in the tin. I quickly rushed them down to a local paint guy to have them painted. I bought new centre caps and got The Panel Store in Papatoetoe to colour match. It all came out pretty bang on in the end. Finished them off with some RE003s.

The above pics were what I could see on the rear sides / rails of the cassette tray unfortunately - the panel itself looks better but likely has issues under the liner… Will pull headliner out later in summer when interior is out to get a better idea though.
