How old is the battery? If you can, get the battery tested and see if it is ok. It may need a full charge on a charger or it is poked and needs a replacement.

I went the other way, e46 to e39, and there is a noticeable difference in the way they handle, performance wise, I didn't think there was much difference but they where about 6 months apart. All depends on what you want the e46 for. The e46 sport seats definitely hold you in better.

Be keen to see some photos of the headunit install, how much was it? Been thinking about replacing the business unit in mine or at least adding bluetooth in some way.

Interesting, keen to get your feedback when you're done. I've gone with a 6 speed as well but I've also got my hands on a large case diff and complete rear subframe from an evo m3.
