  1. The troll in me thinks the best E36 angel eyes are the ones that stay in the box.
  2. I'll come over so you can scan mine!!
  3. Haven't updated for a while. Big thanks to Will for all his help diagnosing and providing solutions for brake issues. As a result, picked up a cheap brand new E32 Master Cylinder thanks to Geoff (FIAT 131R) which is a straight swap and fitted at the same time as replacing the ABS module and pump with an E32 one Andy sorted out for me. Brakes and ABS now work! Still a little bit spongey and there's a pressure/squeak coming from the pressure regulator that connects to the brake bomb. It looks like the seals around the switches are leaking so I've ordered new switches. Hopefully that will fix any remaining issues: Also, since lowering the front the slight clunk (a worn bush somewhere on the passenger front side) has got much worse. Happens in the same spot in the when you turn the wheel at very low speed or standstill but not while moving. Martin suggested pitman and idler arms might need realigning after lowering so will have a look at that when it's on a hoist and find out which bushes need replacing. Track and tie rods are new(ish). I've also got csi front spoiler, rear diffuser and mirrors ready to install once painted. Front is genuine, rear diffuser is a rep and mirrors are from an E36 M3. Rear diffuser and mirrors need a fair bit of work to get them to fit so that will be one job over the summer. Also psyching myself up for pulling the top half of the engine off for refurb (strip and powdercoat valve covers and manifolds + replace gaskets). While it's off the road I'm going to send my EGS to Dinan and see if they can figure out a chip that'll work. Their 4hp24 chip only works on the US boxes currently but they think they can adapt it if they have my control unit.
  4. No, rego was CHH319, sold in May I think.
  5. Was trying to find out if it's possible without it being an awful lot of effort! Six speed would be fun but TBH I think a proper GT car should be an auto. I've heard the six speed versions are pretty notchy and hard work... Not what you want when your continent-busting! Although six speed on our roads would no doubt be a good option... If I can find one that'll fit (and I can afford). Still think the 5hp30 with Dinan tune would be great with the M70 but probably easiest to do when I need a new engine as well.

    Dirty M3

That's just a BMW engineer on his lunch break, isn't it John?
  9. Wolf (Wokke, not my son!) has found some literature on the 5hp30 that says only engine speed and the gear selection for the cluster display are transmitted via CANbus. That must make things simpler, right? Have asked him if he can share the doc.
  10. I guess if I can ever afford to repaint the car, that would be the right time to do the engine swap... For now let's leave it as pie in the sky.
  11. V8 manual box? Not 100% sure. PS I've got a stick.
  12. You're probably right, Tony. You can help plonk it in when Alice is done
  13. That sounds easy... I'll just do that
  14. I got an ACS rep from eBay for under $100 painted including shipping. Fitment was good but a bit of a PITA to stick properly to the glass. Ended out using Sikaflex.
  15. I know even less about aftermarket controllers than I do about OE ones. What are the pros and cons?
  16. Yeah! Only thing I could find online about it! Only from 94 on the E31 with M73. Pretty certain any 92-94 bimmer with a 5hp were all DME 3.3 with M60... so CANBUS. Not sure about Aston and Rolls though! My 3.64 LSD might be a bit short for the 5 speed (but not harm in trying).
  17. Interesting... Not 100% sure the signal is analogue, so I need to find that out first! I guess the converter needs to be two way, i.e. convert CANBUS to analogue and analogue to CANBUS. Also would help to know what info the EGS and DME need from each other, I suppose as it might be different for the M73 DME vs M70.
  18. haha, Andy! I don't think 123D manual mode is effectively tiptronic at all but maybe that's personal preference. I think the 5 speed is a much better box and the additional gear would make a helluva difference to the acceleration. Also, there are some good s/w upgrades for the 5 speed which can make them a lot more fun.
  19. It's not the fitting as it will be straight swap, it's the transmission control module. M70 communicates with 4hp24 EGS via analogue, I think, whereas 5hp30 is CANBUS, so somehow the CANBUS signal needs to be translated to analogue and vice versa.
  20. So the 850i from 1989-1994 came with the 5L M70 V12 and a 4 speed ZF 4hp24 gearbox apart from a few rare 6 speed manuals. BMW produced only a very few 850ci's (in fact there were less of these than the coveted 850CSi) from 1994-1997 with the 5.4L M73 engine and a 5 speed tiptronic ZF 5hp30 (and even rarer six speed manual). While a manual conversion is very appealing it's also bloody expensive and I think a GT car really should be an auto. My 4 speed with 3.64 LSD and Wokke chips is great but I can't help thinking how much better (and faster) it would be with the 5 speed tiptronic box which are far easier and cheaper to find than a manual six speed for a V12. Fitment would be no problem but the issue - I anticipate - is going to be communication with the rest of the car since the M70 DMEs and 4hp24 EGS are non-CANBUS but the 5hp30 EGS is CANBUS. Can't find any examples of this being done online so I'm guessing it's not that easy. So my questions are: Any ideas how you could translate DME data to the EGS from an analogue signal (or whatever it is) to CANBUS, and vice versa? Could you run a parallel but independent controller for the transmission? (or would that mean you lose things like cruise control, etc) Would it ultimately be easier (albeit time consuming and expensive) to swap a complete M73 and gearbox?
  21. Hey Dave. Great cars both. Look forward to catching up in the New Year.
  22. I expect after New Year will probably suit everyone... Not sure how much notice I need to give to book the screening room at Seafarer's. It also has a bar and menu by Josh Emmett so it's not a bad place to meet up!!
  23. Think I got mine from Schmiedmann before they're shipping got way over-priced. I've had good success on larger items with BMW South Atlanta - dealership in the US with good prices and a decent online store and international shipping.
