I struggle to believe that he bought that car without investigating the common issues or the costs to repair them beforehand, if its true then it was just stupid. I also can't comprehend why he decided it was a good idea to drive it to the mechanic in the state it was in, a towtruck would have cost less than the tank of gas.

I always use Wurth screenwash additive, but i use raw (untreated) water so its probably some kind of toxic algae bloom!!

Cleaned 11 years worth of scum out of the window washer pump filters in the M5, surprisingly the washers all work again now, also, unrelated, i have a spare new unused washer pump if anyone needs one!

I feel a bit sorry for people that bought them at 4-5 years old before all of the issues were well known and were hit with big repair bills in their first year or 2 of ownership. At least now there is no excuse for being ignorant of the issues before you buy one. Mine has needed some fairly significant wads of cash thrown at it, but nothing unexpected, and i still think they are the best 500 HP car you can get for the money!

It was a great car to buy new and sell before the warranty ran out!!

Are you going to use the motor from the 320d? Don't "forget" to change the fuel type on the registration, otherwise you won't be able to pay your RUCs!

I upgraded the speakers in my E39 touring i also fitted an aftermarket headunit hidden in the factory location, made a huge difference to the sound, i used JBL speakers and just replacing those was fairly straight forward, the headunit was a solid days work just sorting out the wiring !! I did sacrifice the factory fitted phone though.

For a trip like that you should consider throwing one of your spare wheels in the boot, even with AA or similar you could wait a couple of hours on some of those roads for them to show up.

I just did Auck - Hastings and back, down on Monday and back today, nice drive but slows down a bit with traffic especially trucks! Unfortunately i had to do it in a 2.5 L turbocharged, rear wheel drive, 6 speed manual, 2 door Kia truck!! Would be much more enjoyable in a nice BMW. I didn't stop and tourist because it was a work trip but there is plenty to see and do on the way, i recommend staying in Napier rather than Hastings, its a lot nicer.

That Leaf is knackered but either of those would still be a better bet than a 320i ! If you are dead set on an e90 look hard at the diesels.

I'd rather drive a leaf than an e90 320i
