  1. I know which end gets hot! If you get a replacement and want me to have a go at fixing this one i can, worst case scenario i cant do it and you get it back still broken!
  2. Tricky but not impossible. I would probably want to do a test run on a spare before saying i could do it!
  3. You could tig weld an allen key to the end of it then cut it so it leaves a short hexagonal piece there, what diameter is that shaft?
  4. I use the BMW stuff, its not that expensive and it has mixing ratios on the bottle! I don't think you need 50/50 in our climate but it wont hurt.
  5. Made some more progress on the e21, got the bonnet fitted properly, got the heater fan sorted, changed out the coil so there are sparks, and powdercoated the rocker cover, also fitted the alternator, and discovered an oil leak in the sump gasket! Gotta love old cars.
  6. I dont trust the AA guys totally, one of them tested my system when they had to jump start my 540, told me the alternator wasnt charging, i put a new battery in it and 4 years later it is still fine! Any competent auto sparky should be able to check it for you and tell you the problem.
  7. Those new automatic chargers wont do anything unless they can detect a battery, it sounds like yours is too far gone to detect. If you have an old style charger it will just throw 12 volts at no matter what, but it sounds like it might be time for a new battery.
  8. I can sell you a 540 touring that will tow it beautifully!
  9. Too far from the trigger wheel to see it?
  10. Might be easier if i can come around and check , pm me if that suits, or i can just buy the whole hinge assembly if its easier.
  11. Yes, and full of holes. I pinched 2 off the project to get the other project under way, but am still keen to get more.
  12. I have, 30 bucks each from Mitsubishi for my Vr4! 100 each is ridonculous!
  13. Bugger. There are so many cowboys out there and it looks like you found a couple! If you dont have a regular mechanic that you trust it can be a gamble, a good start is to make sure they are an MTA member, it gives you something to fall back on if you have a problem, even better is to get some recommendations, say from a forum or something! They cannot do work they haven't been authorised to do and then just expect you to pay up, but you can't be vague when you tell them what to do "give it a service" means different things to different places. When i was working on cars we would spend time with the customer and write a list of exactly what we were going to do and tape it to the steering wheel while they were there. I would negotiate the minimum amount you have to pay them and walk away, treat it as a life lesson and start again. Im sure everyone on this forum can recommend where to take it next time.
  14. Nothing quite like watching a professional tradesman at work, such a great learning opportunity!

  18. No panic, but i would like to get it sorted by the end of the month if possible.
  19. I have recently been watching the mid 90s btcc races on you tube, there are a few on there and it is fantastic racing, with some fantastic cars (and drivers) would be awesome to see more of them coming out of retirement and getting used again. (The cars, not so much the drivers)
  20. Do you have a bonnet hinge mechanism for sale off your donor car, i need the 2 brackets that hold the ends of the torsion springs in front of the radiator. Cheers, and good luck with the project, its always good to see an e21 being saved from the scrapyard.
  21. There are 2 e39s at pick a part in Takanini as of this morning, cheapest way to get 4 screws that i know of!
  22. Finally put an engine INTO an e21, after 4 x taking them out! nice to have some room to work with!
  23. Swap for a manual 540 touring?
  24. I dont think its possible, i paid a guy to do mine and even he got glass everywhere, mostly from the bottom corners, theyre a bit of a pain to get at.
