Govt Breathes New Life Into "Clean Car" Legislation

The ratio is not part of the calculation, it’s sole intention is to deter buyers away from the high emitters of CO2, so the figures are set up front - hence why they are quoting figures for HiLux, etc in the article. Final figures for the ratio won’t be known until after the event, but charges have to be stated up front to buyers. Even the worst V8 charge won’t be as high as the full EV rebate though. In the first few years there will probably be a surfeit of money overall, but that will soon switch the other way. -
Is This Where The E30 Market Is Now..?

It could be because it’s only the front, not the whole kit, that makes it look off against the rest of the car. The fact that it’s busted doesn’t help either. -
I don’t think so, it’s supposed to be based on the arrival date into NZ from the shipping import documents. I know of a few cars that have fallen foul of this and had to be re-exported and then re-imported. On the other hand there are plenty of cars that are complied every week that shouldn’t be. Here’s hoping the government will finally get tougher on this now they are pushing the new emissions rules. 2007/08 into Japan were most likely EU4 compliant from factory so wouldn’t need to be 20 years old nor SIV.

Needs a fair bit of TLC to bring it up to scratch - not been used for about 2 years will cause a few issues. Got some nice goodies on it, leather, M20B25, not sure about that front bumper.. Good little project for someone who is handy, and can do rust repairs. -
Pretty sure that’s still the case, over 20 years since first rego when it arrives in NZ.

Yes it has, which is why the most stolen cars are the older ones without all the modern anti-theft devices. Most are opportunistic or kids. Lots of methods out there, some real urban myths as well, and if someone knows what they are doing then they will take it. All you can do is minimise the risk and make it harder to take than another one. i see the listing has been pulled from TradeMe... because of the stolen bit or..?

There’s quite a few threads around on this topic have a search for those. I’ve personally brought in three cars, but all were quite a while ago, it was quite straightforward if you read up on what was needed - NZTA web-site was very useful, plus talking to your local compliance guys to get them on-board. Rules are a bit tougher now, but a new Yaris should be fine.

Thread cleaned up. Let’s keep it pleasant and on topic please. Thank you Admin.

Mainly because the E30 M3 was five stud, so looking to replicate that, plus the increase in rear track to fill the wider M3 arches without spacers. The extra brakes is a bonus, plus the ability to run 5 x 120 wheel styles that are used on the M3 - of which I have a few sets already!

You’re giving the MPs too much credit, it’s the figures in the background that tell them what to say and think. Not sure what they are called in NZ, in the UK they are “civil servants”. There is a lot of research going on in this area, but whether it comes to a workable, scalable solution is not known - unfortunately, the scramble to EVs will probably see it miss out. -

In the months / weeks / days before the ban on internal combustion engined vehicles comes in I think they will be going pretty cheap.. Apparently there is a government "advisor" who is very much anti-combustion engines and pushing a very hard line agenda on the electrification of vehicles. Enjoy your classic cars whilst you can. -
The gentleman's agreement that BMW would make the Roadster and Toyota the hard top version of the joint collaboration would probably come into it as well.

I guess you don’t mean of the house rennos? 🥺 Dropping the rear end on an E30 is pretty simple, most people have probably seen / done it.. Came out pretty easily and stripped down, the usual one stuck bolt was absent today which was nice. Now to push out the Delrin bushes and swap into the new beam.!
-
Wife has a three line whip on for house Reno’s at the moment, so garage has been taken over with paint tins and stuff. However, I did manage to clear all the stuff away from the race car and start to pull out the rear sub-frame for swapping in the 5-stud Ti rear end. Also ordered 5-Stud adaptors for the front end from the US. Fingers crossed I can get away with finishing it off.

FWIW My experience is very different to that, I have whacked a few pot holes on the poor roads we have to put up with. Worst one was circa 100kph on the Napier-Taupo road into a big hole in the dark. Hell of a bang, I was surprised the shock hadn’t punched through the top of the strut mount. Still drove fine, no loss of pressure. Wheel was buckled, but repairable, on the inside due to the big off-set. No cracks or splits. Tyre was toast.

Anyone know anything about this M3?
E30 325i Rag-Top replied to Matt T's topic in TradeMe discussions
Looks very familiar (the ad that is not the car itself..) might even be someone on here, but I can quite place it. Have a nose around the threads, it was pretty recent. @M3AN probably the go to for info.. -
Could work out to be a good buy at that price, if you are handy on the tools and the problems are an easy enough fix.

Welcome! Photos of your car are always appreciated...

Yup, very under-wheeled for that kit and that much low. Would look a lot better on 16s or 17s. Scarcity is not the only factor, some cars were produced in low numbers for a reason, lack of demand, or too expensive, etc. Whist the Baur may have better dynamics, a drop top is more of a cruiser than a sports car. For me, the roof design on the Baur was always an after-thought (and personally I’m not a fan of a targa top) whilst the BMW vert has much cleaner lines, especially with the roof down. It is also quite market dependent, UK has much more demand (and availability) for the vert, whereas NZ is a much, much smaller drop top market. -

There’s not the same level of demand for the cabrio versus the coupes, especially the M-Tech versions, unfortunately so that normally sees a comparable vert priced lower than a coupe. That said Andy’s is very tidy, and I would say around $30k value, so insure for $35k. -
Probably because the shape and fitment was developed in situ, so there were no measurements to get the bends made. That said, my biggest issue is the ugliness of the welds. I can understand the tempered v polished finish if they were beat TiG welds, but those look like slugs laid down from a MiG gun - compare the welds on the pipe to the silencer. Not saying I could do better - but as it’s so prominent in the look of the bike they should be better finished.

Govt Breathes New Life Into "Clean Car" Legislation

So, with the new budget there seems to be a $300m+ pot of money to be put towards encouraging buyers into EVs, which can be used once the government has worked out what this will be and how to apply it, and what cars it covers, etc. It will probably be a while before we see anything from that in the market place. At the same time, there were a number of plans / suggestions / reports, that were released specifically related to the government goal of being "carbon neutral by 2050" which whilst it may sound a long way off, is still in most of our life-times. In amongst these blue sky dreaming documents were a few interesting little gems for private transport, buried in amongst all the non-specific "we need to do this but we don't have a solution of how it will happen" type objectives. Transport, and in particular, the private passenger vehicle (ie us driving our cars / suvs) has been identified as the largest generator of CO2 emissions that can be dealt to (other big areas of emissions - trucks, ships, cows, etc seem to be being ignored as there does not seem to be any easy solution) which means it is getting a lot of direct attention. The common theme in all the reports is that the vast majority of us will be driving fully electric vehicles by this point in time, so not producing any C02. However, in order for this to be possible without the need for more CO2 to be produced from the electrical grid (apparently even geo-thermal production emits CO2, who'd have thunk it..) the overall number of journeys by private car is planned to be reduced massively, by upto 75% in one case. So what happens to those other three out of the four journeys that are being made currently, the plan is that whilst there is some reduction in overall number of journeys - more working from home, on-line meetings, etc, the biggest reduction will be achieved by people using public transport. Hmm, interesting - a bit of work to be done on that side then. That way with many fewer journeys being made, fewer electric cars will be required, and the country will have the infrastructure to cope. Very quietly, one report even went so far as to suggest that a TOTAL ban of ALL internal-combustion engines would be needed to get to the carbon neutral situation. So whether you want to or not, your only option would be to drive an EV. The proposal of what will happen to the current (and growning) NZ fleet of over 4 million private ICE vehicles that would effectively become paperweights was not even mentioned. -

Probably better off asking in the “Tools For Hire” thread in the For Sale section. I tried to move this over, but can’t seem to do it from my phone.
