ha, I remember when the written off black coupe this engine setup came out of sold via turners for $7k, was a good price for the manual trans and supercharged engine etc... That car is worth a little more than half the asking price in reality though. An E36 non M3 sedan is only so desriable, 4k tops, engine and trans package with supercharger 10k, I couldn't see this car getting any where past 15k being realistic... owner is dreaming. After I despec'd my E36 V8, removing all the fun bits, exhaust, interior, 5 speed back to 4 speed, m3 suspension / brakes to 325i brakes etc, I got 8k, wouldn't have got much more with the other bits on it (sold all those for a few thousand). Now it's a wreck, rusty and been through 6 owners.

Pretty cool. Should prob get a cert, sport seats etc for an asking price 25k, some peoples expectations get quite high for that kinda coin. Thats e34, e39 M5 and E46 M3 money!

Rebuilding the diff for my car this month. New seals, bearings and painted etc. Question I have regarding the rebuild, the original gear ring gear, center and pinion are being reused, so in theory would the factory adjusting shims for the side bearings and pinion bearings maintain the correct contact pattern and backlash? or..... is it not quite as simple as that? My understanding is the specs should be maintained, but when changing ring gear / pinions for a different ratio the shims adjusted to suit Any input would be appreciated.

Nearly every e36 I've touched has water leak problems, passenger side. Certainly a design problem + age/enviromment that causes it.

Mans progress always comes at a cost and nothing is perfect. It's also more convenient for some to make money out of imperfect solutions.

Hydro is so destructive to set up, look at what they did to build the Clyde and Roxburgh damn, flooding half of Cormwell town, flooding farm lands and destroying a beautiful landscape for miles. Everything has its dark side

Pffft totally fishy, 12k then relisted for 15k Classic example of not being happy with price and wanting more

Can't imagine anyone who would waste time on an automatic eh!

What has been happening with the DME? Water ingress or something?

I really think it comes down to common sense. If you really want a ticket to something get one on time yourself, if you miss out, tough. If you buy third party, consider it a risk, and if you pay a lot, quite frankly I think it's foolish.

For sure. All options have their own difficulties, pros and cons. It's easy to over capitalise in the engine side of things, not so much with costs, but time and complexity. I think at least the M54 path is cost effective, offering an engine you can read with OBD2 systems for full code support if it plays up which is a real benefit over the older engines. I've had a few E34s over the years, would like another for sure. But one thing not to forget about is overhauling the suspension, especially on higher km examples, aside from the basics like shocks, its the ball joints, and just about every bush would need replacing, worth it in the long run of course!

I'd put a M54B30 and manual trans in it, good modern engine, plenty of parts around, would go well. M50 turbo is a lot of work, especially if you don't make up parts and weld it yourself. M60 would be easier, but finding a complete manual conversion kit is sometimes difficuilt and expensive, 6 cylinder trans don't work.

You think Petroleum companies and the car industry would watch that happen? The world economy would collapse with such illogical bans in place that would put millions of people out of jobs, part stores, mechanic garages, the effects would be endless! Statements like this are just sensationalist nonsense anyway, as with most man made global warming propaganda.

Well said Good point about the PHEV aspect of the i8, it's not really a new concept (ie diesel electric trains etc) but fairly revolutionary when it comes to a car. Will be good to see more of them and where they can take it, while keeping a sporty conventional car feel that plenty of buyers want.

Meanwhile...

Mmmm I think theres an exponential graph of car for money based on the complexity. A lot of people pay good money for the E30s because of their simplicity, lightness look and charm Bit different with a more formidable car to take on like an 850i, more complicated, heavier so less demand from the average punter. Does mean a bargain can be had for those reasons however, if you've got the skills.

Will be interesting to see where this goes. Probably 10k +/- 2k

The way I see it is you need to be like Andrew M5 V10 Touring = Fun drives Leaf Battery Car = Boring A-B slog / Save fuel cost It's a good compromise. I'd consider buying a leaf for the same reasons. Makes having a multi cylinder petrol car all the more special to use for fun & pleasure only.

Next year it will be 100k

Rear active struts rebuilt and installed this weekend. Ride is smoother and more poised when giving it some pace around the bends. Did a full clean out, new seals through out, dust boots and installed a new high pressure valve type for the nitrogen accumulator spring for recharging purposes. Most pleased!!
