M5 progress update... Bearings are well worn... 'caught these in time' was what Jon said! Crank shaft is all good despite the doom and gloom warnings So that's a huge relief! Now we're working out the list of everything we need to do and should do. We're planning to get the increased clearance BE Bearings from Turner Motorsport. So pleased to have a pro like Jon working on this - and prepared to do it. And yes the radiator will get a good clean

In my opinion you are only partly correct. The E60 M5 is a technically amazing car. Performance, handling, comfort, everything, is huge. It's totally in line with what an M5 is, and its totally a drivers car. In fact non "drivers" would shy away from them. And there certainly isn't much marketing attached. Given the other cars released at the same time (E63 AMG and Audi RS6) the M5 excels as the drivers car by far. The issue is their fuel consumption, maintenance and perceived reliability. Now if I was to consider F10 and on-wards, then I perhaps start to agree with you more. M5, E63, RS6, RS4, Guilia, etc. all start to blur the lines.

Recommend you add some more pics of the vehicle including interior Levi.

4 da haterz. Is it just me or is that quite cheap for a near new engine?

Yeah, my 6.5 ran 2 bar (~30psi) in 3rd, 4th and 5th and was manic. It was about as much fun as you can imagine a tiny 2l 4 pot could be, did 11s quarters all day long too.

Having done the swap in my e30, I recall there being a Rev hang, but I think I've just gotten used to it over time. Have yet to reflash the ecu with the factory manual map though. As for diff ratios, either is fine, and might come down to preference. Though I'm looking at the 3.15 ratio to closely relate to the setup I have in the e30 of 3.64 and the g240.

I think that does them a disservice. My early life was over three generations of 4G63 cars and they were all something special. As are GT-R's and Supra's of the day. If you have a clean one now they're worth a lot, because they've earned it.

The yanks already had Supra's and they were better than the JDM models and the FD's were available as well. What hiked the prices was the Fast and Furious movies, almost overnight JDM performance cars started going through the roof and the focus went off V8 muscle cars. I remember selling my business and thinking I will get an R33 or R34 and it was just after the 2nd movie came out and everything went up almost 10k overnight. Its the same with Muscle cars especially Aussie ones, try buying a Torana of any sort nowadays and all you will get for 20 K is rusty project, but its 100K if you want a V8 LX hatch.

That and the generation that grew up idolising them as kids now have cash to get them. 80s kids lust after 80s cars, its the circle of life.

The only reason the JDM "halo" cars are expensive now is because of the bloody States and their 25 year rule. They'd still be worth nothing if there wasnt demand for JDMasFK RHD cars in the US. Not really a good thing to base your comparison on tbh.

I can see where you are coming from, but I think a slightly different crowd like the boosted cars. I dont mean the Flat Peak Doof Doof crowd but there are car guys and girls who really do appreciate what a turbo can do, and I do understand how the N/A motors appeal, but In terms of high revving engines that make power through those revs they are the cars of another generation. I just look at what Toyota Supras were selling for in the late 90s early 2000s and while they were desirable back then it obvious they are now almost unobtanium, same for GTRs of course and older Turbo cars like STIs and Evos are going that way now as well. In 10 years time a lot of turbo BMWs will be wrapped round lamp posts or will have died due to poor maintenance and I expect they will start climbing back up in price as well. BTW in the 90s and early 2000s other manufacturers made high revving high high hp per CC engines; Toyota and Honda come to mind. It is a bit disingenuous to say anyone can strap a turbo to car and make a fast car, there are plenty of turbo cars that aren't really very quick, engineering and design are still vitally important. Also never forget no one really cares how the motor works when they are looking at the other cars tail lights.

Ahh I never really noticed, apart from it being carbon fibre and the clear coat is toast. Car is at detailers for a cut polish. Will take some pics this weekend when it's back.

Got the halo bar for the mount sleeve. Away to the engineers it went along with the center stainless pipe to get machined and cut to size. Why couldn't BMW mke gaskets like these?..solid thick rubber. Anyway...still luv em...rod bearings and all. Have to get or fab another gearbox mount and support. Also gear lever shaft and stabiliser's like 80-90 mm too long...?

I think at this stage the value has a lot more to do with the perceived cost of ownership than whether or not it is a "true" M car (which it absolutely is!!) Generally speaking the people who are buying at this price level can't or won't spend the money required to keep them at a standard at which they are worth decent money. Good time to buy one as spares for my wagon....

Its a honda jazz, you cant fool me

For that price it's worth getting one just to hack the mufflers off it and burn around town doing skids making a racket in it and goofing off with the boys. Would be a blast.

Because some people are idiots. Noticed someones un-tethered fuel cap was in the gutter at the exit to the fuel station near work the other day, so yeah, that's why they are tethered.

Don't need to code lock on drive away, turn it on via the options on the indicator stalk. Fuel flap isn't supposed to lock via the central lock button inside the car. Comes in handy at night if you want the fuel station attendant to full your car but you also don't want to get car jacked

Drive one in anger and I think you will pretty well surprised. They have great balance for a front wheel drive car, to the point you forget it is front wheel drive

Yeaa boi...???? mee sumps arrived the the land of the Free. Picking up the alti & fuse box for the Ls tonight. Hopefully start the engine on the stand by next weekend. Draughting & pricing for headers(1 7/8)...hate imperial? + material. R side of headers ..2 under and 2 over . L side heaps of space but less past gearbox where the collector will be to the rear of it where it will join to a Y piece...so 2.5" into a Y into a 3". ...so maybe rectangular tubing with the correct volumetric air flow and area space to keep the height on left only....will see....cos eye loike mee stance ay.

Another little update for the M3. Took the car out for a drive the other night and when giving it the jandal the radiator decide to give up. Not surprising considering it's 25 years old. I was looking for an OEM replacement but my options were limited so I went with a Mishimoto. Pretty good quality but my only gripe with it is that the fitment was a let down. Had to fabricate some aluminium brackets for the oil cooler as there were no mounting points and had to trim bits of plastic here and there on the fan shroud to get clearance around the viscous fan. Happy to have the car back up on its feet, just needs a really good wash. Also managed to replace the drivers seat quick-fold cable which had broken. This ended up being a little bit painful but got there in the end. The other thing which I've done is put the car on some style 24s for a more period correct/original look. Not related to this thread but I picked up an E39 M5 the other day too.. what an incredible car! Bunch of photos below.

Blacktops came out around 2007, have plastic rocker cover Vs the magnesium one on silver tops. Black tops CCV system is built into the rocker cover, and most of the time requires replacing the whole rocker cover (they also crack). Silver tops the CCV system is external, and available as smaller parts to replace, and the rocker covers corrode . Internally the engines are identical, other than the blacktops will all have the cam ledge seal fix done, whereas some of the very early silver tops wont have. There is some conjecture around blacktops outputting slightly less power, but the standard for measuring changed at same time too, so who knows.
