Right, so I collected the start of my upholstered bits today, rear seat assembly and front seat inserts. Also dropped front the bolsters off to get fixed and recovered. Must get on to those door cards or it's going to look a little odd for a while!

Has been a little slow progress lately as have been working out the fiddly parts of the build plus finding the time at the moment. Have finally finished building & installing the new manifolds (still need a slight bit of modifying) Bolted everything together gearbox, driveshaft, all suspension components to measure up all clearances and build the exhaust with out interference. So happy that the time spent measuring and checking heights that everything lined up perfectly and i dont have to go back and re-do things. Fitted new SRS concept offset solid control arm bushes for more clearance. Very nice product. Had another nice headache of the build turn up in the last few days, a nice DINAN lightweight dual mass flywheel. I decided to stick with the dual mass as i wasnt 100% sure on a solid flywheel and and a few people mentioned best to stick with the dual mass setup, it is also running a Sach's M5 performance clutch kit so will hold nicely but give a nice drive as well. I just need to reset the self adjusting pressure plate. And i have finally began the process of refinishing my wheels, have been stripped and sanded and cleaned and are currently at the painters. Have ordered new bolts from america and working on correct specifications/sizes of the lips to order.

So ive played around in the car scene for a while and mainly had old jap cars ive worked on as projects as such but my daily has usually been a euro. been through a couple of alfas a vw couple of rovers and more recently a merc which I need to sell as Ive just picked up a 630i. First time owning a BM and im rather enjoying it. I pickled it up from Chch on tuesday and drive it to auckland, would have been more fun if I wasn't horribly hungover from the long weekend and in full on zombie mode by the time I got home. So Im looking at adding some wheels and coilovers then maybe something like like a remap and tinker with the engine just a little. then the audio as I like my sound. Looks like a good bunch of guys here and a vast array of info too so look forward to getting into it.

Simon managed to get the heater box out for me yesterday while I was at work (good lad). No rust there thank goodness! Car is booked in next week to get the windscreen rust fixed so I can get the car back on the road hopefully next weekend. Goals for this weekend: Replace front brake hoses Scuff out minor floor pan surface rust and seal Rewire the head unit harness Install map light mirror Replace perished gasket on heater box and re install. Make hands dirty That will be a good start to getting the car back on the road! Edit: Corrected my awful spelling.

lmao, "no mtec cars made this early, so this is the top spec"... uh, forgetting the M3 are we? Bet it feels as tight as my 80,000km jap import E36 did, just before i replaced the flogged bushes and dying jatco box. KM dont mean sh*t.

Follow up. For a few days the issue seemed to be sorted but it came back yesterday morning. So I have my car booked back In for the next course of action. The ASU (Active Steering Unit) sits under the drivers seat. The fault logs and some analysis showed that it was not behaving consistently so the next course of action is to pull it out and send it to a specialist in Christchurch. They will run diagnostics and find out if anything is out of place and if it is and can be fixed, fix it and return the unit. If it can be fixed I have to buy a new unit. Still only talking $200 to around $600 which is still much better than blindly changing the angle sensor which testing indicated was good. Evidently JAP and other assian imports that sit on at the docks and in transit for long periods can have these sorts of issues. In some cases this can be caused by mosture and others buy bad battries. In the case of the battery mine is good there too. Anyway I will report when I get the unit back on the outcome.

Its not unheard of for older evos to have fibrerglass kits on them as the original bodywork has been obsolete for a while and was horrendously expensive. Yes, the area around the chassis stamp is usually a bit haggard, not sure why. Some of them even have a weird stripe of orange paint over the chassis plate too. The lack of bracing is what would make me think maybe the shell isnt an original Evo shell. Its an old car, most of them will have crap, cheap mods done to them and most have had a real hard life. At the end of the day, if he didnt pay too much for it, the running gear is all evo, he enjoys it and whats been done to it, the difference from a GSR shell to an EVO shell is piss all and can be fixed with some 3 point braces and things. I wouldnt worry too much.

Quick update... New 17x8.5 wheels with Falken ZE912's..will get a decent pic of them all on when it comes out of the garage next. Caved and bought a b25 so have been busy stripping, cleaning, and putting that back together. It was out of a Motronic 1.0 car which wasn't going to work (easily) with my facelift shell and my gearbox was also lacking the required mounting points for the crank sensors so I've put all my 1.3 bits on and bought a 173 computer to use in the mean time until the turbo goes on. Supposedly the 1.3 sensor will work fine with a megasquirt - bonus. Replaced the water pump, belts, thermostat, gaskets etc while it was all off. Almost there now and looks pretty good I think. Just have to get some new injector seals and hook the loom back up. Also got some M22 to AN adapters so I can hook up my Fenix oil cooler to the factory connections with some sweet shiny braided line because it looks cool. What else.....Cleaned and painted my intake manifold and rocker cover with some excellent high temp paint. Came up amazing and has a very hard finish. Couldn't get the metal emblem on the top to look any good though so eventually I got sick of looking at it and dremelled it out. It now has the steering wheel emblem from the donor car embedded in it. Looks amazing but will be interesting to see how long it lasts. Apologies for the crap photos. Most were taken in the garage around dusk and the lighting was ^&%#.

First, talk to the seller. Raise your (friends) points and see how he responds. Attempt to reach an agreement. If that doesn't work, file a dispute against the seller. Can claim up to $15k. No legal representation allowed within the hearings, relatively inexpensive filing fees. Just make sure there is irrefutable evidence of deception - be it intentional or unintentional, it doesn't matter to the law. If it is indeed not a genuine Evo that was sold to your friend as a genuine Evo, that's pretty open and shut. The hardest part will be quantifying the loss value. http://www.justice.govt.nz/tribunals/disputes-tribunal

Greetings all. I'm joining bimmersport after owning my 2001 530i E39 for about 10 months. Like a lot of my generation, I grew up, and learned to drive, in a selection of Datsuns and Nissan's. My first car was a 1974 Datsun Violet, 160j SSS, a car I inherited. However, not being mechanically gifted and conscious of not attracting the unwanted attention of fuzz, I moved onto a sequence of sedans. That was until last year, when it was decided that my family needed a second car. I saw an opportunity to get something a little more exciting than our Honda CRV. At first I started looking at 300ZXs, a long obsession of mine, but at long last I concluded that they were fun, but impractical, and also a little small for a man of height. So I started looking at BMWs until, through word of mouth, I heard of a friend of a friend that was thinking about selling his 5 series. He had worked in France, for BMW, developing the drive train for the series that succeeded mine. So now I have my own bimmersport, and there's no looking back. I love driving it. It's a great high speed cruiser with enough to make it fun too. I came across this forum while researching the stereo. I wanted to be able to get the higher frequencies and possibly be able to connect up a aux input of sometime. I've learnt my car is to old to have the global radio and would need to replace the unit with a European model. Future work well be required on the steering system as the car darts and wanderers a little, and I've also noticed, what guessing is the fire wall, is crumbling away. Sorry for the long post.

They should have got a "proper" E38 and gone all out for the Protection version, the police would have had trouble stopping all 3.5 tonnes of one of those. There is a BIG difference between the double glazed windows (which are 1/2 inch thick and not bullet proof) and the bullet proof windows (which are THREE inches thick and in special door surrounds with protective coatings on the inside, which not surprisingly are), then there are the bullet proof tyres, steel plated armour, etc, etc. NOTE: This is not condoning criminal activity, merely pointing out they bought the wrong 7 Series for the job.

Stacker Pi update So working through the solution I needed a way to power a hub only when the Raspberry Pi is running to avoid battery drain. The hub means I can add high current USB devices without over loading the Pi. The hub is triggered from a logic relay ( the pibus designer suggested this) The relay gets its trigger power via the GPIo stack on the Pi The relay has one side connected to the cars 12 volt and the other side connected to a 12v to 5v 3amp power supply. The will be enough to provide full power to each of the useb hub ports. Stacker chassis with cut down pc disc drive bay and plastic standoffs for Pi and USB hub Modifying USB hub, added dc power and USB connection directly onto board Mounting hub in stacker Blue ray player , sata cable extension for USB adaptor Sata to USB board holes lined up with usb hub holes nicely

Progress is slow at the moment as we are getting to the difficult parts of the build at the moment. All the driveline parts have been mocked up, drive shaft is out being shortened and balanced at the moment. Have refreshed all bushes in the shifter with delrin and added a custom built DSSR. the shifter feel now is fantastic now to add a weighted gear knob to finish the whole setup off. Have been spending the last few weeks trying to get the new exhaust manifolds built to work around the the steering shaft and be able to have them fitted to the engine before install. Will get photos up when the extractors are completed. Fingers crossed in the next two weeks the exhaust will be completed then i can haul the engine out for the final time to refresh everything and paint the engine bay. Picked up some E38 wheels from francois and fitted with some more appropriate sized tyres fitted them up and pushed the car out of the shed to see how the final fitment will be, quite happy with how its sitting now.

Engine, driveshaft and gearbox are out at last. Load leveller made it so easy. Starting to get a tad worried about the amount of room or lack of it between the exhaust manifold and the firewall as I was hoping to fit a 3" pipe down there. Anyway, I'm a walking advertisement for simple green and chemz grease eater now. The gearbox came up mint! Also replaced the rear seal on the box and the cushion thing on the shifter arm.
