Hi Over the last couple of years, I've been learning how to read the OBD2 diagnostic logs for E46's and E36/7's. This has mostly happened over in the E46Fanatics forum. Finally got around to writing up how to do the diagnostics. It's based on the M52TU and M54 engines but the principals should apply to most engines. It's a good intro, if you haven't done this type of diagnostics before. Enjoy. How to Read OBD2 Engine Diagnostic Logs V1-7 NZ00Z3.pdf

Help - can drivers electric seat be manually adjusted to max height?
NZ00Z3 replied to treone's topic in Maintenance
Do you have a forward and back electric seat motor? If so, take the Bowden cable out of the motor and put it into the height gearbox. Attach your reversible battery drill to the Bowden cable and slowly raise the seat. Alternatively, get onto www.RealOEM.com : Search with the last 7 numbers of your VIN and then browse for the part number of the Bowden cable for your seat. Purchase and install the new cable. Search other BMW's with electric seats. Find one with a similar length Bowden cable. Purchase and install the cable. -
A 300HP Z4 that is not a Z4M. 1 of 167 RHD models made. 1 of 2 in N.Z Priced about the same as a Z4M roadster or coupe. An interesting car, but just a few too many BMW badges for me. They would soon be changed to Alpina badges if it was mine. Need to distinguish it from other Z4's a bit more. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/bmw/z4/listing/3552426877?bof=TYwpqE4v

When my E46 323i had a bad inlet cam sensor, it would crank for 20 odd seconds before it would start without the VANOS active. S0, your 5 second maximum crank is not normal. Don't know about the "leave the key in position 2" issue, never tested it.

Yes, the fuel pressure is too low. Confirmed by the: Fuel Pressure low sensor Both Short Term fuel trims.

I got 1/2 way through typing a post about how easy it is to get a key for a BMW that does not belong to you, then thought better of it. Don't want sort of information out there on the internet. From the information provided in the above posts, these crims are more than 1/2 way there already.

Yes your DME will be OBD2, but the rest of your modules will be OBD1/ADS. Have a go are reading the codes in your ABS or ZKE4 (GM4) module.

Hi I haven't had to scan an OBD1/ADS module yet. The earliest car I've scanned is an 8/98 E36/7 (Z3), which is totally OBD2 compliant. The scanner coverage list I posted in the link says it covers the 3 series right down to the E30. They only had the 20 pin PacMan plug under the bonnet. The TradeMe Advert below lists it as a OBD1 and OBD2 compliant. I've played with the scanner and looked at the E36 section. Right at the beginning, it asks you if your car is made before or after 03/98. After and it's OBD2. Before and its OBD1/ADS. This section lists the cars and all the normal ABS, etc OBD 1/ADS modules. Scanner is relatively expensive at $395 new https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/car-parts-accessories/tools-repair-kits/meters-testers/listing/3546347938?bof=41KQbi62 https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/car-parts-accessories/tools-repair-kits/meters-testers/listing/3546345245?bof=41KQbi62 Hope this helps.

Agreed. 1/2 of the Z3 fleet is the same. DME and EGS are OBD2 with the rest of the car being OBD1/ADS. That's why I have the Foxwell NT530 with BMW software. It will talk OBD1/ADS to the older cars. Better than carting my XP computer around in the Boot.

The Foxwell NT530 scanner with BMW software list the E39 as being in it's coverage. http://blog.foxwellstore.com/foxwell-nt530-bmw-obd2-scanner-vehicle-coverage-faqs/

While it is as cool as a 32 Ford hot-rod with a Chev engine, You've got to give the guy credit for a conversion that is really quite smooth and clean. A very good job. Dyno chart gives it around 225kW or 300 HP. Not sure if that's at the wheels or engine? About the same as a Z3M. Love the Branding. a combination of GM and BMW to get GMW 🤣 At $35k, priced around the same for a Z3M. While I enjoyed the photos and video, it's not destined for my garage.

Fishing line (upgrading the traditional dental floss idea) to put behind the plate and cut through the tape.

Yes, increasing the thickness of the spring raises the ride height. Have a look in WWW.RealOEM.com. Put the last 7 digits of your VIN number into the search tool and you can browse for parts specific to your car. It will tell you the spring pad thicknesses.
-
Use RealOEM.com to check your parts compatibility. It looks like the front subframe is the same for all E46's https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partxref?id=BR92-EUR-05-2001-E46-BMW-M3&mg=31&sg=05&diagId=31_0576&q=31111096902&series=E46

I recall that the E37/8 and E46 Airbag modules can stored up to 3 events. After that their crash data memory is full and the module needs to be replaced. Get a scanner with BMW software and look for trouble codes, that will tell you what condition yours is in.

E89 2.5 Jap import only runs on 98
NZ00Z3 replied to First Timer's topic in Forced Induction & Performance Tuning
What make of 95 and 98 fuel do/did you use? I know this sounds like a silly question in the N.Z. context, but I've just learnt on another BMW forum, that the various E10 fuel grades give a 5% lean offset of the fuel trims. Could it be that the 95 was E10? Is that product even available in N.Z.? -
Have you had a look through or posted about your problem on https://z4-forum.com/forum/ They are a knowledgeable bunch and may have already come up with a fix for the problem, if it's a common one.

Where in the South Island are you? I'm in Timaru. -
I have a jap import E46. When I looked up the DME software version and date of programming, it was all original. Any particular model of BMW you're thinking of? By the way, I see you're in the South Island. Anywhere near Timaru or Christchurch? Christchurch has a good BMW Facebook group running with regular monthly car runs. PM me if you're interested.

How many Palmetto Green Z3's are there in N.Z?
NZ00Z3 replied to NZ00Z3's topic in General Discussion
Look again, it's disappeared due to it's camouflages -
Recently purchased a 1998 2.8L Palmetto Green Z3 out of Greymouth. Original factory colour. It's an unusual colour for a Z3 or any BMW for that matter. I was wondering how many others are out there? You are a bunch of eagle eyed BMW spotters out there, so who has seen another one? Please let me know the town/region that you spotted it in so, that we don't get 6 counts for the same car. I know of one other in Timaru. The probability of 2 Palmetto Z3's in the same town must be astronomical. Here is my car.

The engine light will have an associated trouble code. What is the code number and description? If it is a mixture related trouble code: Record the 4 fuel trims when on 95, both at hot idle and at steady 100 kmph. Record the 4 fuel trims when on 98, both at hot idle and at steady 100 kmph. Post the fuel trim results here. -
The BMW 1939 327/28 Roadster had the first triple carbs on any BMW, So Alpina is a little late on the scene. Bet the Alpina went like stink though.
