Hi all, I thought I should start a thread for my daily driver, to use as a to-do list and keep track of its progress. My name's Kasey, I have an E36 auto 325i coupe as a daily driver and general beater vehicle, I picked it up with 130,000km's on the clock for $2,400 in reasonable condition. All with the goal to: a ) keep it reasonably comfortable for the Mrs b ) not modify it to the extent that it'll need a cert (already have one car that needs that!) c ) do no performance mods, this is my luxobarge workhorse, not a sports car to put a poddy on and do skidz bru Our family has come to own quite a few E36's recently, so I jumped on the offer when I could, it's awesome having all of our parts to swap around from car to car without worrying if it'll work or not! Things to do as of 04/05/14: - Replace RL tyre - Replace brake bulb - Replace foglights - Dye headliner black to match leather interior - Lower front to even out rear I like to take lots of photos, so 56kbewa- everyone has ADSL at least these days so screw it let's begin How it was when I got it IMG_9739 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Family's 328i manual IMG_1313 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Family's M3 IMG_1308 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr I picked up some Style 42 reps for cheap! Was very happy for a while, but now it could use a little drop in the front IMG_0048 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr IMG_0037 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Untitled by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr I did a few things like repair the window wiper module, replace brake bulbs and found that there was a corroded contact causing my "Brake Lights Failure" error, jesus that was annoying! The culprit, afterwards I sanded it clean but I'll need to add some solder in there to make it better DSC_0250 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr The bulb holder, I bent out the pin more to push against the contact for a better connection, hopefully! DSC_0249 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Took some victory photos with my toycar IMG_0739 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr IMG_0733 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr A while after, helping my friend Ben with his high hp mx5 project, we popped into Crunchy's, got to see his E34, hoooolyyyyyy IMG_1290 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Got to hear it idle, that thing is a beast! Remind me and I'll make you a new cushion for your seat, Steve. Did some work on the turbo mx5 for a while IMG_1550 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Which brings us to this weekend just been, on my way down to Waihi at 9pm Friday, I got a puncture, had to limp it to the nearest place I could safely jack it up 20140502_204248 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Unfortunately driving on the tyre for that long lead to this, holy sh*t 20140502_204925 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Midway through swapping the tire, the factory jack folded on itself and the car fell on the ground, luckily I had two wheel nuts tightened on the spare, so it wasn't too bad. Safe to say I wasn't a happy chappy. Fast forward to today, I've had some leather seats in storage for a while but I've always been put off because the seats I have in the car are manual, and the leather replacements are electric ones I haven't been bothered to wire up. The main thing that put me off wiring the electric seats was that it was common to run power from the lighter 12v, but you coudn't use the lighter socket (or so I've read?!) which pissed me off, because I use it to charge my phone all the time. So I thought about just putting the leather seats on the manual frames so I went at it! The old seats IMG_1669 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr The new IMG_1666-2 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Let's get started IMG_1672 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr The damage to the drivers side seat, which I'll repair at some stage when I can be bothered (for the mean time I sprayed the foam black so it didn't stand out like dogsballs) IMG_1693 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr IMG_1695 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr Manual frame stripped, everything worked out well! IMG_1698 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr By the time it had finished it was dark so I couldn't take photos, everything went in without a hitch though, was a pretty simple job, just take your time and don't be rough, there's only a couple of screws and a few clips holding everything in. Found this glued to the inside of the standard seats, must be the options for when the car was ordered? If anyone could decipher it that would be greatly appreciated. IMG_1704 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr The loot I found IN the seats, some japanese coins (my car is a jap import) and a Barkers cuff link (I think that's what it is? I'm not that baller.) IMG_1711 by Postcard from 2309, on Flickr While doing the seats, I saw the silver duct tape the previous owner had put over the fog lights (they're cracked) was peeling off, I only had black electrical tape but it'll do the job 'till I can order some new working fogs. This is destined to be a long term project.. So I'll start keeping my eye out now regardless, and if anyone hears of anything, hopefully they have this post in mind. I'm going to be fussy. I know what I want. And Ideally I would like to find that 'perfect' M3 for me - or one very much close. I have ALL the time in the world, and I'm not in a rush. Price would ideally be within $30,000. The tick list: - SMG Gearbox - Under 120,000KMS - Full Leather Interior - Ideally NZ New - Harmon Kardon - Heated Seats - Side Bolsters - Memory Seating - Black/Red Interior - Rain Sensing Wipers - 19" Wheels Completely stock - unhacked springs/suspension/intakes/tunes etc Colours: Any, par Titanium Silver, Pheonix Yellow. No Kiwi Green Interior. The things I can let slide.. - Sunroof (ideally no, but will say yes) - Business Unit ideally Widescreen, but can modify myself. - Ideally Facelift - but I don't care if it's 02 if it's the one. And hopefully the engine ticks over as smooth as anything, the subframe is pristine and my diff is good as gold. I had all these options and more in my Carbon M3, and people question me and go "but why want them", well because why would I settle for anything less than what I had.. I'm not in a rush. I have my trusty Schnitzer steed to tie me over

Realising this thread should be in the projects section now...but anyway... I ordered a JB4, BMS Dual intakes, Charge pipe w/ tial BOV, and Oil Catch Can around 2 weeks ago from the states and arrived on Saturday morning Was quite busy this weekend however had some time yesterday afternoon to attempt to install the JB4. I don't have much experience at all with engines apart from changing oil and filters, but read that it wasn't too difficult, so had my ipad in the garage with the PDF and Youtube video instructions and took around 1.5hrs. Car started first time though and didn't throw any codes so success! Hardest bit was knowing how much force was needed for the removal and installation of some bits but now I know can do it in 30mins if I need to remove it at all This car is now a beast! I was worried that I had done too much research and my expectations would be too high, but there is a very noticeable difference in power and torque. The first time I let the boost build in 3rd gear made me laugh like a kid Excited to feel (and hear) the difference once the intake and charge pipe are installed later this week

I think the owner of this workshop has some serious smarts about him. He realised he was in a no win situation so just bit his tongue, gave the guy a free groom and said sorry, making his business look professional and responsible. Now the REA looks like the wanker he is, since he has gone to the press over literally nothing.

Began taking intake side of engine to bits, want to paint intake mani/ rocker cover, do cambelt/tensioner, waterpump, thermostat, rocker cover gasket, oil pan gasket, alternator belt, replace some of the stuffed hoses etc... FCP Euro is going to make some money. On a side note related to these stupid oil threads that keep popping up, the car had done 350,000km in Wellington before coming to me, with regular oil services but only getting what oil the service agent put in. It's IMMACULATE under the rocker cover. Take from that what you may.

Glued my IS lip back together, repaired, painted and fixed it to the car. New ignition switch, got the drivers seat sliding and all the interior lights going again. Replaced glove box latch with lock-less version. Oil and filter change and bit of a cut/polish! Should be good for WOF tomorrow. Successful weekend I reckon!

Sooo I blew up the gear box in my mx5 (reversing it out of the driveway to clean the beemer) which has led me to potter around on the bimmer fixing the stuff I was previously too lazy to fix, bulbs etc. So I tried my hand at painting the M colours on the kidney grille! Be warned I suck at painting and painting those lines was hellahard. Last time the two were together for a clean! Kidneys disassembled! The painting studio '5 sitting there broke as f The finished result! Paints still drying so I'll take final pics tomorrow, but I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out~

The GPS tracker is funny, I have busted a mate who was doing a WOF on my race car, he was shocked when I told him I got a call from the Police saying my car had been spotted at high speed in an industrial zone, had him going for days. I have the opposite problem. The Renault Tech's drive too slow. I tried to explain problems I have had with the car but they could not replicate it.. so I had to take the tech for hot lap to show him what was happening at high revs etc... was a spark plug, but they replaced just about everything else on the ignition before checking the cheap spark plugs... must have been a $1,500 warranty claim for a spark plug. TBH, anyone I leave my cars with I have no issue with them driving the car as they see fit, I know that they could never beat it as bad as I do.. haha.

I have just had a similar thing happen to me. But we dealt with it a different way. I didn't go running to the media after the issue had been resolved like the tosser in the "article" did. We supplied all the data to the owner. Let him have his say and a bit of time to look at the situation. We got a written apology from the employee that had breached our trust and the law. It happened to be a 19 year old mechanic. If we had supplied the data to the police he would have lost his licence for at least 12 months. 158kph. The owner couldn't apologize enough. He was quite embarrassed by it all. We were given our money back for all the work that had been completed. Although the owner is responsible for his staff. He can't stop them from making mistakes. This kid made a pretty big mistake and cost his employer business. I doubt he will be doing it again anytime soon knowing how close he came to loosing his job and his licence. Because of this I had no interest in sharing the info with the Media or the Police. It would ruin his business. And that is just not fair. You need to be careful these days. With the focus on Health and Safety more and more vehicles are having telematics devices installed into them. Police are using this data as evidence quite frequently now. I work for a telematics company. I often see drivers being let go for excessive speed. And am getting more and more requests from Police to supply data from crashes.

Yup, absolute media blow up, sensatialising out of all proportion. A customer like that is a pain in the arse! Not even knowing Christchurch, that is a totally logical circuit to take a vehicle for a test drive if one is required to confirm repairs having been done. The speed, if correct, "legally" is an issue but whoopee!! The business owner, and the employee, offered to make amends to the situation, to which the customer agreed. It should not have gone any further. Customer not looking to destroy the business - yea right! I have, over the years, frequently needed to test drive vehicles at more than 100kmh & often drive 20ish kms to highlight a certain problem :oThat said, i have total respect for customers cars, often informing them of having done the above to confirm an issue. In all my time, have never had negative feedback of such. Just glad I am in a town that is about a minute drive from access to open road.

You may purchase parts only in bulk, in the total amount this car currently has on it, for the asking price of a complete car

speed dependant steering + power steering issue = requirement to check operating at speed. I'd bet the owner of the car would lose his sh*t if the tech had driven the 3KM or so just to get to a 100KPH zone, the southern motorway, plus he would then have to get to the nearest offramp, and then the return trip. Getting that car from 50kph to 90kph and back would be a matter of seconds. I dont have a problem with what the tech did, looks like a standard road test to me. I have more of a problem with the customer getting his apology, free groom, and then still dragging the company through the mud.

I would expect a mechanic to road-test a car for any issues before a service, but 39km/h over the limit in town is not on. Watched an apprentice wheel spin my car most of the way from the car park into the service bay once. Cost the Service Manager a free service and two new tyres

Oil/filter change. Still no loose oil pump bolts swimming around in the sump. Last time I actually pulled the pan off, this time I just gave the pan a few tracks with the rubber mallete after draining oil. Allegedly the sound of bolts banging around in the pan is unmistakable using this technique. Wish I'd read that prior to the first oil change and decided to occupy a morning undoing and retightening the 400 bolts in that pan while laying in a pile of leaves...
