I've done the swap in the E30, E46 inners, E36 outers. As M3AN says, you can use E36/E30 inners, but you'll need another purple tag rack in a short time.

The leather has also had a bit of attention with the Colourcare system, looking a lot better now, also replaced the back seat base with a spare recently acquired...

Have managed to do a little bit on the car in the last month. Focus has been on the front of the car, headlights and bumper. Bumper has a number of cracks which I'm addressing with a large old soldering iron and bog... the left "pork chop" getting some attention as they are hugely expensive... the headlights have been taken apart for adjuster replacement and lens polishing, back in now, but the auto levelling system doesn't appear to be working so requires some investigation. Plus I have a condensation issue in the right hand side light. It has a new gasket and the rear vents are clear, so head scratching on that one... The front bumper will come off soon for a proper fix up and I'll give it a go at painting it, as the weather warms up... same with rear bumper in due course... The oil leaks on engine appear to be the vanos solenoid gaskets, possibly the valve covers, and the rear main seal. I'll be ripping the front off the engine to attend to some of this. I've decided to recondition the transmission when the time comes instead of fitting another, that's when the rear main seal will be replaced. I've also lined up a change in interior to silver trim, along with replacement door cards and centre console with blue stitching. A widescreen monitor will also come in. Another bootlid as well with the wide number plate recess. It's looking like a bit of a long termer... too much to do...

Grill swapped. Was much more of a pain that I anticipated but got it done. The M5 grill supplied by FCP has the brake ducts blocked except for some small holes, not sure of the reason but it's not a race car so I'm not too worried. It was also a good chance to clean some of the grime off the bumper but that just revealed even more stone chips ? Also removed the rear badges. I've got more M badges coming in chrome and in black. I think I'll wait until I see them before deciding which to use. My plan for the car cosmetically is to black out as much as I can so leaning towards black.

Style 193s in 8 and 8.5" just too see what they sit like, fitments OK... dunno though. Its sitting a bit high due to jacking and not settling. (They need refurbing and the tyres are totally dead)

Finally taking a quiet moments lunch to post on my recently acquired 2008 135i. Sparking Graphite Metallic with Coral Red Leather. Bought from Auckland City BMW, provided with a complete and detailed service history from new, serviced only at BMW, and found every WOF sheet in the glove box :D. My wife says this is a midlife crisis type of purchase. Paint is swirl free as dealer did a cut and polish, but it seems to be more of a cut and a bit less on the polish as there are still fine inperfections here and there that a true machine polish stage would have removed. One day I'll rectify this but haven't got the energy right now :D. Won't be doing anything too ambitious for a while on this as got a good deal on Autosure with it, so will drive it liberally (as much as one can with a weekend occasional driver) and hopefully the big ticket items will require replacing over the next couple of years (Injectors! please injectors! and turbo wastegates). She's had a new water pump 2 years ago as well as some injectors replaced under warranty. I need to do an assay on what injectors are currently installed so I know where I am for the future. I'd really love to at least get a dual cone intake (if only for the sound!) and possibly a better intercooler on there but suspect that is squarely in Autosure voiding territory so won't be going there for now :(. Have driven only an embarassing 19km (yes NINETEEN) in the last month due to lockdowns and prepping Post purchase activities were: Wheel deep clean, they do a good job at the fronts but never get in behind the wheels. Poorboys wheel sealant used afterwards. Proper interior clean (it was okay, but needed some detail). Paint sealant (Klasse High Gloss Sealant) Collinite 476S Super Double Coat (lasts > 6 months I've found) Paste wax (Fireball) Front and rear dashcam install. AVIN 10 inch Android 10 iDrive screen replacement. Plans: Walnut blast booked in soon too as it seems not to have been done at all prior to now. Smokers pack retrofit!

After what I paid for it: $12,700 I haven't had it for long (just before lockdown) but I'm thinking of selling the 130i. It only gets runs at the weekend as I walk to work and I'm thinking I might get more use out of an offroader. Man Maths may still prevail and allow me to have 2 cars but its just not a sensible option at the moment. Anyway: ~107,000km Lovely condition - few imperfections (stone chips, slight scrape on the bumper, very mild kerbing on alloys) BMWP Exhaust - Brilliant noise, a little louder on cold start-up but then is quiet until you really get on the throttle (original exhaust can come with the car but has been chopped so a little fabrication would be required) BMWP Air Intake - Looks the part. Was on the car when purchased (as with exhaust) so no idea how it really changed the performance/noise. Recent tyres - Hankook Ventus Primes Clean WOF from Feb 2020 Rego out in Oct but I'll be adding 6 months when I get round to it

Thanks for the input all. I'm told you can fit three in one container which reduces shipping costs by quite a bit. That's made the decision easy and all three will be on their way shortly. Hope to meet some more BMW owners in summer ?

Yeah it's the one I was thinking about. I've seen better E30 series cars go for far less than that.

your coolant pump is the problem. once overheat your vehicles dies off you can restart your vehicles once its cools down. and you can notice during your first start your fan is causing very loud noise. your coolant pump is short circuit.

many thanks @modz @Gaz @M3AN and @nick496 for getting back to me, much appreciated. I had e46 inners in my parts stash for years, though used them on my... e46, oddly enough. e46 inners, e36 outers for this lad. game on.

There's an Australian company offering full DME refurbs with a warranty on TM at the moment, I have no experience but if that's the problem it might pay to send them an email.

You must use e46 inners or machine them (as I did) to allow for internal venting. Neither e30 nor e36 inners are compatible with the e46 rack venting mechanism. For outers, total length (inner+outer) comes into play. So you want approx the same length as e30+e30 with the required e46+???. If e36 and e30 outers are the same length you can use either, if they're not then you'll have to work out what gives you the same overall length (or sacrifice alignment adjustment). For those that have used inners without venting grooves on an e46 rack you're going to blow out boots and ingest volumes of crap that will ruin your rack in short time.

Same thing happened to my 135i, similar codes to what you have. DME needed to be replaced. Mine was water damaged. DME box seal had been pinched. Expensive if you go to a BMW Dealer ($2100 + GST) or you can send your DME, CAS & Key to a ECU specialist and they can clone your old DME to a new one or used one. Luckily mine could still be read and cloned.

Also finished the lower rear quarter so I could finally fit the rear bumper and battery in the boot. For the mess that it was it has come up really well. Glad I replaced the whole section. Post welding the section was sprayed with zinc etch primer and filled before having textured finish sprayed on to match factory.

Been keeping busy on the last remaining tasks before wof and cert in the coming weeks. I’m refurbishing the m3 wheels this week and fitting the 16” pusher fan. In the meantime here’s some pics. Pretty happy with how it’s turned out

I think 35d should still be higher torque and power than 30d even though both are single turbo. Rather than make a heap of engines in different capacities the recent approach has been to use the same core engine and either “unter” or “ober” tune it, so engines are technically referred to as XxxB30O or xxxB30U depending on outputs - which may be just a tune or might be more turbos. Due to the number models this then theoretically gives some markets may offer the 30d version of the 3.0ltr diesel whilst others may opt for the 35d version. I still believe it’s a different model (although very similar) with different power. To be totally sure find the exact model code, the four character code, for the two different models then google that to check the power outputs. Pretty sure the NZ 30d was a KW42 model code...

Weirdly, the e39 M5 doesn’t have brake ducts from factory. At least not the euro spec cars. Both of mine have not had them.

I don't need 2, let alone 3! If you want to swap that intake for a stock one with BMC filter + cash your way send me a PM, you'll likely get more dosh that way than installed on the car. Regardless, GLWS.

Spoiler alert. IT RUNS! Very happy and glad I made the choice to take it to P&S' workshop as there were a myriad of electrical gremlins resolved (including replacing the E39 engine loom). While there it also received Wheel alignment - now within E30 spec for cert General check over Exhaust fitment Shifter re-fit (I hadn't had time to finish properly). But again, big shout out to Peter and the team at P&S in East Tamaki. Hoping it comes home this week so I can finish the panel work, replace tyres and get on with the cert.
