217,100km New tyres. Went with Continental Max Contact 6's all around 225/45/17 front and 245/40/17 rear. They were on special at Tyre Clinic and as all tyres the online reviews were mixed and also from Aussie so hard to really gauge what that meant for NZ conditions. In the end it was between the Conti's, Potenzas and PS4's...since this car mostly has at least 1 child, if not two onboard at all times it seemed I wouldn't experience the higher performance of the more expensive tyres anyway so I went with the cheaper option and with the few km's I've driven both wet and dry since having them I am delighted. Quiet, grippy and comfortable. I'm guessing they won't last very long but thats ok for now (probably won’t feel this way in 12 months). The car is so different with the new tyres , I really can’t believe the transformation.

Morons who don't seem to realise there is still a pandemic (just cos we're in L2) and go to the Blood & Cancer centre in a hospital and proceed to take their masks off whilst sitting in a waiting room with others (many of whom are very ill and at high risk, like me) talking sh*t - which I can assure can still be done whilst wearing a mask lol... and this was family members, not the person who was there for his chemo. Arrogant, insular, inconsiderate, morons. And I'm being very kind.

We have been a dumping ground for dirty end of life vehicles for decades, now we are becoming a dumping ground for end of life EVs, it represents an amazing opportunity to develop world leading systems for recycling these vehicles, but in typical fashion the government will be too short sighted to take that opportunity and our kids and grandkids will end up paying to clean up the mess. I hope I am wrong. And yes I am part of that end of life EV owners club, but I intend to repurpose the battery from mine for solar storage when it is due for replacement.

Hmmm rather not have to deal with people asking idiotic questions and stuff to be honest. As I get older my tolerance (or lack of it) for people that don’t bother to do research and expect a brand new car when buying something with 189k km has decreased significantly. I used to try and not offend with replies now I just prefer to offend so idiots will f**k off.

I've recently purchased a second hand leaf, mostly because the cost of it was so low (4 figures), and it meets 90% of my driving requirements. (E30 suits the longer distances funnily enough) But they do seem to have gone up in price with that clean car discount, which is achieving it's true goal of driving more initial interest in purchasing a new EV. Which is ok as a short term strategy, but debatable long term, as I feel that simply continuing to hike fuel prices would be the easy way to force people into more efficient vehicles, or public transport. In terms of running costs, there's no question that EVs are currently super cheap to run. However it really depends on what the government decide to do once the RUC exemption expires in 2024, and if they'll charge them at the standard RUC rate, or come up with another scheme. After that I'd guess that having a Hybrid would probably still be the vehicle of choice as a single vehicle. But I imagine there will continue to be a large number of enthusiast who will hold onto their vehicle(s) of choice I put together a wee calculator based off some claimed economy figures from fuelly to play around with to justify the purchase of a third car.

Im in Manurewa and in lockdown 1 I could go for a 10 minute walk near the botanic gardens without seeing a single car on the road and at night it was dead quiet. In the last days of this level 4 i would see over 150 cars driving past on this same walk and there is some pretty clear parties and gatherings. Im not at all surprised to see the continued spread in south auckland with my anecdotal experience.

I don't believe there is a particularly large amount of thinking going on by the people involved. Well, certainly not aimed at the consumer. But no doubt James Shaw will make a buck somehow, the limp wristed womble.

Hey guys, just recently purchased an E53 4.6is in Estoril blue over black nappa leather with Titan shadow trim! Have been looking for something bigger to roam around in especially for trips in summer & the mountains in winter. 2nd car I’ve purchased so hopefully i’ve made the right choice but I’m loving it so far. Wanted something unique and somewhat special, after doing a bit of research it seems the 4.6is’ in Estoril blue & Imola Red are the ones to get. It’s NZ new, comes with most of the service history from previous owner as he owned it for the last 10 years. Has all the original booklets, owners manual, handbooks etc & 2 keys! Has done around 180,000km’s with 2 previous owners (so the previous owner says) Have yet to go in to get it checked up but will be doing so sometime next week along with a new WOF. From what I’ve seen in the service history most of the big jobs have been done including a full replacement of the cooling system, timing chains, gaskets etc. Nothing has been noted in regards to transmission besides the usual service but it changes gears smoothly (up & down) without any jerking. Overall body condition is decent for an almost 20 year old car. Minor spots of rust due to paint chips, few scuffs on both sides of the front bumper, headlights are a little foggy & the tailgate won’t close! It seems the spring inside the mechanism has come loose & won’t latch on so I’m constantly hit with the “bootlid open” code & the interior lights on in the boot. (Turns off after 10mins or so) will be getting it sorted ASAP cause I don’t want it to drain my battery. Will keep you all updated as I get this beast up to looking factory fresh again! Looking forward to hearing any advice from people who are in more knowledge than me (so basically everyone lol). Gonna put a to do list when I’ve figured out where the cars at mechanically! Thanks for reading, stay safe & well! - B

You're not wrong about finding the data! I used 17.2kw/h used per 100km +15% for charging. Those were the most realistic seeming average I found for a current leaf. Ad another 15% on top for an early model. And I used 150gm co2e/kWh as the emissions base for supply, national average is a wee bit lower and a little added in for transmission loss. So yeah. Funnily enough EVs are less emmitty

Soon you can expect media campaigns funded by the government that driving so far as to exceed the range of a responsible EV like the MG ZS is irresponsible wanton consumerism, and working from home is best for the country. You'll end up in the stocks for suggesting this might be a reasonable requirement; and when they discover you've a Maserati under that drop cloth in the garage, the guillotine will be oiled.

The question on everyone's lips is will a reasonably-priced replacement battery be available when the time comes. One hopes a suitable modular solution is available to provide for the varied custom solutions each manufacturer has engineered for their cars to date. Eg if Toyota, Nissan, BMW et al all used standard cells (as with the ubiquitous automotive battery in it's various standard form factors) it may become affordable. Not only are we a dumping ground, but we're a clearing house as we export much end of life waste to third world countries rather than dealing with it here. And then there's tyres.

I wonder what they mean by this Cheaper to run on electricity when the subsidies expire, electric RUCs are added and electricity prices rise? Will be curious to see what the costs end up being. Cheaper to buy electric cars when semi affordable used ones have 50-60% battery health and new ones are way more than most low to average income owners would want to spend verses a 5-10k used Japanese import (eg Corolla) A lot of things to play out, I'll watch with interest.

Some "interesting" additions into the legislation when it was introduced into Parliament last week, exerpt of the Industry response below: The car industry is claiming a new addition to upcoming Clean Car regulations allowing officials to set a proportion of an importers’ vehicles that must be zero-emission is an ‘ICE ban by stealth’. The Land Transport (Clean Vehicles) Amendment Bill was introduced by transport minister Michael Wood, who has insisted multiple times that it will be enacted this year. Industry groups have been digesting the document, with their first analysis coming to light now. A major concern highlighted to AutoTalk by both the Motor Industry Association (MIA) and Motor Trade Association is under the Clean Car Standard of the changes, regulators may set a minimum proportion of an importers vehicles that must be zero carbon emissions. Both groups note this requirement has not previously been consulted on. “The ability to set, by regulation, a minimum level of BEVs is an ICE ban by stealth,” MIA chief executive David Crawford says. “This is a new requirement not previously consulted on and is something the MIA totally opposes at this point in time. “In our view the Government should not make this decision until the discount and standard have been in place for at least seven to 10 years so they can properly assess with the reduction on CO2 emissions is tracking as desired and also that there are viable low emissions vehicles available in mass.” MTA advocacy and strategy manager Greig Epps calls this their ‘stand out concern’. “The proposed regulations would impose a further penalty or fine on an importer who could not meet this target,” Epps explains. “This sort of mechanism was never discussed in any of the consultation papers and it is a double blow to those importers who deal primarily in ICE vehicles. “This mechanism could be used to introduce an ICE ban without any further consultation with the industry or the public. If the proportion was set high enough, it would make it impossible for an importer to bring in a mix of vehicles. This has been widely relayed in various industry and mainstream publications, in this instance the full article can be found on Evs and Beyond here.. https://evsandbeyond.co.nz/clean-car-bill-ice-ban-by-stealth/

You don;t need extra range. After the first drive you are just going to leave it where it runs out of juice anyway. The CCP thanks you for your support. An article will be written about how you think your MG is far superior to your Maserati and BMW.

Mid way through the lock-down and I'm jealous of those with car projects underway. I did a search of my garage and found 2 sets of Bushes for the pedal supporting bracket. Add these to my new black pedal set, I've gota project. This project all going well should take 1-3 hrs, I stretched it out for 4 days (more pictures added) Slacker

I personally think it is very cool. The rear spoiler ‘spoils’ the design aesthetics a little (unlike the E34), but love the decals and interior design that makes it an Alpina. Agreed, the price is not in sync with the Kiwi market, but I bet there must be less than a handful of these in NZ. I still recall driving a friend’s 300,000 km E34 Alpina B10. Handled incredibly and it’s appearance defied its mileage. Great cars- these Alpina’s! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ok0XLDn6w8A. Check this German clip- comparing this Alpina to an E39 M5.

^ yeah, so I just called up my original insurer, and they told me there's no way my Peugeot can be considered a classic car (lmao) and they will insure it for a grand a year, on 5k agreed value.
