Hey guys, just wanted to share some picture of a set of BBS LM wheels I've repaired. Such a shame to see nice/rare wheels forgotten and sometimes scrapped. So I gave these a new lease on life. Wheels were very curbed, bent and a few flat spots, so I stripped them apart, gave them a good clean, soaked bolts and cleaned them with a tooth brush. The curbing (missing chunks) were welded back up and some small cracks around bolt holes were welded up and redrilled. The flat spots in 2 wheels were then removed and all wheels were made true again. The excess welds were machined back. Then finally, finished polished. I had to find a full set of center caps which was quite tricky and expensive. Long story short, I ended up buying another set of wheels and using the caps and then selling on. Didn't paint the centers as a new project came up for my M3 and didnt have time to paint but would have painted in the original silver had this gone ahead. Hope you enjoy!

I would just like to give the cops some credit, at least the ones I came across were fair and gave me a chance to slow down after finishing a passing manoeuvre instead of being a trigger finger. I had two flash their headlights until I was back under 100km/h and then let me go on my way.

Custom made front splitter. Straight bolt on to the M sport bumper/chassis. Very sturdy. -9mm marine grade ply, reinforced with 4msq of 200gsm weaved fiberglass. Wet layered with westsystem marine grade epoxy resin. Mounting points etc have been reinforced with extra layers. - All hardware/mounts are either 316 stainless or aluminium, no need to worry about rust/corrosion. - Length can be adjustable with minor modifications - Mounts all the way to the sway bars, so can work as a full front end under tray/skid plate. Will include all mounts/hardware etc. Currently in storage, but here are some pics when it was fitted in the car. All parts are in mint condition, it was literally on the car for a week until i changed set up. $350. Auckland. Can ship around NZ at buyers expense.

looks great, love the combo of the color, wheels, wing and height. I agree with Michael on the points about height and window spoiler. Its a shame the US ones didnt get the good engine.

Sounds like something is broken if the car is setup for E85 but performs like crap (I assume that the holden has all the those attributes you mentioned - fuel lines/ flex sensor/ecu mapping etc) I have to calculate my blend , plug my laptop in and flash my ethanol map backend on the car - run some resets (octane reset , afr reset) then I'm good to go - so quite manual when I change fuels I saw a 45-50hp gain / 80nm TQ on the dyno on E60 blend tune vs my 98 tune, I love running ethanol and if it was at more service stations, I would run it full time tbh

I got an old m60 dual mass you can use as a pattern. Currently has a m62 ring gear fudged onto it though. When you talk to the engineer he'll likely need a ring gear from something. An auto flex-plate should work?

Are you able to jack the car up and then trace it back up? Could be the back of the valve cover leaking or oil sump as it goes all the way back to the transmission. Maybe compare it in color to your engine oil and gearbox oil? Gearbox should be reddish, but depending on age could be a darker brown, the filler plug is on the side and depending on the gearbox should be a 17mm male hex socket, stick a finger in there and compare the colors. Both the seals on the transmission are in the rear so if it was the transmission it would be by the driveshaft or the side / mid section were the filler and drain plugs are.

I've never picked you to be the kind of person who believes what's written on the internet Ron I read plenty of reports applauding the 3.0i and plenty to say it's fuel consumption was better than the v8. I guess we only see what we want to see. My heart was screaming for a v8 sportpac but my head was saying get a well looked after petrol. Our e39 is in the 9's and the X5 the 11's, so is it really that hard to believe ? We do however spend a good 90% of our driving on the open road so I would expect it to be different if we were stuck in traffic all day. You're right it doesn't have the kick of the diesel but that's no surprise either is it ? It's certainly got enough for what it is though and if I want to have some fun I take the 535is.

Hey another slight update brought a few stock exhaust and i wanted to gut one and see what it sounds like and before you judge me i will have anoth stock one to revert back to if it sounds like crap they were very cheap so it doesn't matter either way. Not finshed yet (on holiday at the moment) just thought id post what ive done. I went thought 3 cutting disc and a big rubbish bag of what looks like hair. Only removed baffling from chambers 2, 3 and 5 may do chamber 1 depending on how it sounds

It's funny you mention the rear height, I've already raised it since the photos! I just calculated a little too low to begin with. Sitting about 8mm higher now.

Did anything more come of this clutch kit or was it all put in the too hard basket, as i am on the hunt for an affordable v8 clutch kit at the moment

Good looking car. It's a great colour too. Constructive criticisms; Rear wheel height too low, I'd bring it up slightly, consider if the car has stuff in the back or passengers its going to bottom out at that height. Rear window spoiler.. too much detailing, you've already got that rear wing so I'd loose it.

I wonder what the cops will dream up to say about the horrible death toll over the weekend and the abject failure of their decision to fine people who travel 4km over posted speed limits. There are so many things that contribute to accidents and doing 4km over the speed limit is likely to be at the bottom of any list. No doubt their spin doctors have their little minds whirring and pens running hot. Fatigue, poor driving regardless of speed they drive at, weather conditions and not driving to those conditions, poor concentration, etc etc all make a big difference yet the cops target the one that gets them revenue. Now why is that.

lets face it, the E36 is the redhead stepchild of the M3 range.... itll only be survived by a few dedicated collectors, and wont be a car people swoon over like the E30. Im all for as many original ones surviving as possible, but they just arent as loved as any other M3 in the lineup. The E30 is the one people lust over, the E46 is the one people want to drive, and the newer ones are less fun:dollar ratio. The E36 is the one people buy either because they specifically want one, or its the only one they can afford. Anyway, just my opinion.

Mobil also mix Ethanol into their fuel. Accordingly I steer clear of Mobil & Gull. Boat users specifically told to avoid Ethanol fuels. With greater amount of water in fuel tanks due to condensation, filling with Ethanol blends is a *bad idea*. The ethanol emulsifies (makes 'mayonaise') with the water, sinks to the bottom of your tank, clogs your filter, f%cks up your injectors, stops your engine. There are plenty of BMW service bulletins on-line from the US detailing this phenomenon as well. I use Caltex 95 or BP 98, FWIW. No ethanol. I don't know what Z uses; and I don't know what the acquisition of Caltex by Z is going to do to the fuel. BP 98 is good when you can find it; bloody hassle in Rotorua recently, found BP station on my GPS, then found they didn't carry 98, so had to use website to find right station etc etc. /rant. Perhaps you can use Ethanol blends in your modern (as in very recent) BMW. I avoid a world of pain by avoiding Ethanol blends. Slightly off-topic, in Oz last year I tried different Ethanol fuels in my rented VF-SV6 Commode (it could handle all the way up to e85). lower pump price, way lower performance. cheers

Zf won't bolt up from quick measurements from the m111k and zf box I've got here. You'll need to fudge around a bit. Zf box from the 328 e36 or m3 5 speed. A very small % of people care about the brand attached to a part. If it suites the purpose slap it in there.

some years back I had safely driven my family back from a holiday in Auckland. We'd had an excellent run down, leaving a wet Auckland early - may have been ANZAC day? Got all the way to a warm, sunny and dry Porirua without incident, though on straight 3-lane piece of road I encountered an old Hilman Avenger Wagon, tail well-down (overloaded) towing a weaving trailer with bald tyres... doing 100-105. I know this, as I was following him in the second lane travelling behind him. I indicated right, moved into the 3rd (outside lane), and pased him doing 114 ( I know this, as it was police verified). I was nabbed by a policeman with laser gun sitting at the end of the straight, and motioned to pull over. We had a cordial discussion. I offered that I had no issue about the speed he'd clocked me at, and accepted he would give me a ticket. We talked about my journey down from Auckland; he was interested in what time I'd left and did the mental calculation on how long it had taken me and satisfied himself that I'd had a reasonable trip. I said "I have a question for you, officer. in my well-maintained Maxima, why did you choose me, driving 14km/h over the speed limit, rather than the driver next to me with the dangerously laden car weaving and towing a trailer with bald tyres, exceeding his speed limit by 25km/h?" His was the stock answer: "you can't know how fast he was going, yours is an estimate only". I replied "yes I do - I followed him for nearly a kilometre before deciding to pass, in order to avoid the road hazard he presented; our speeds were matched. Now, please, can you help me understand why did you choose to pull the driver presenting the lesser hazard to other road users? I'm not arguing the ticket; I'd really like to understand." "Well, the laser gun has a narrow lens. I focus on the outside lane to catch the greatest speed" "Ahhh, so you're focussed on the number plates of the cars in the outside lane?" "Yes" "and you didn't see the orange Avenger on the inside lane, because while you're hunting speeders and looking through that laser gun you're focussed on one lane only?" "that's right." "Well, thank you for your honesty officer, have a good one." "you too sir, travel safely" As I said, it was a cordial, and indeed respectful conversation. Clearly this passive road policing by sitting "catching speeders at the end of lanes" contributes nothing to road safety. As I mentioned, I had no issue with a ticket for 14km/h over; it was what I was doing. It was the indiscriminate and non-sensical nature of the "policing" in this instance that underscored to me that they "have it wrong".

Same/same. Point is, it has a return. PS, speed never killed no-one, it's the sudden stop at the end that gets ya
  43. 1 point
Problem is there a lot of drivers driving much slower than the speed limit because of stupid fear of a ticket. A trip to from say Wellington to Auckland can have an hour added to the trip and a whole pile of frustration from travelling in a long line of traffic doing an inconsistent speed. It adds to the danger level not reduces it. It also increases fatigue a major cause of inattention and accidents. Fuel use increases under inconsistent speeds. Even the cops should be able to figure this out but because of the additional revenue they extract they call it road safety. There is nothing positive about the 4kmh speed tolerance and it sure as hell doesn't save lives.
  44. 1 point
The road rules for holiday seasons are ridiculous, as mentioned by you guys, the emphasis is in the wrong area. I am lead to think / believe that they are revenue gaining...not actually focusing on the source of the problem. Really need to make defensive driving courses compulsory, and "teach" new / and seasoned drivers about basic physics of motor vehicles etc. i could only imagine how %% many accidents are not caused soley by speed...but stupid people making stupid decisions? Can lower speed tolerance and force the general public to obey this and that....but none of this will "REMOVE THE IDIOT OUT OF THE IDIOT DRIVER"...haha.

I got a little beepy thing on the bike that let's me know when rozza are around. They've been hiding at the end of passing lanes all weekend, nabbing people trying to pass that a**hole doing 85kph the whole time then speeds up to 100kph soon as there is a passing lane.
