Still here ... still doing headers pretty much, will be half way through the finish welding tonight and completed the most difficult side of the engine. Did something fun today also and added the elusive 337 Ci boot badges Other pic shows what I've been doing to bridge some of the gap left in the donut sections ... those things have been such a nightmare πŸ˜• Really could use some thin strip stainless ... could make some but yeeaaaa. Also had a hose fitting burst in the garage, super lucky is just blasted straight down from the roof and just splashed over everything.

Latest M5 update includes branding my calf muscle with a distinctive exhaust tip...... I was getting a 30 pack of carbonated beverage out of the boot, summer, shorts, jandals, got a tad close to the passenger side tips when reaching in and boom - nice semi circular brand on my leg. It was definitely a WTF the is that pain, and who is burning a barbershop down moment. I was stunned and then pissed myself laughing followed by some pain and immediately thought I have to tell someone about this

Much has happened since my last update. Most significantly, I discovered why I was quoted 10k to repaint the car. The prep work required for a good paint job is ridiculous. I spent many many hours sanding, filling, sanding, filling and sanding some more before I was satisfied with the surface to paint it. I got very lucky with my spray gun set up. I had been watching trademe for a while looking for air compressors and spray guns, and I eventually found what I was after - a guy who had bought all the right, top quality gear brand new but didn't want it anymore and was flicking it cheap. I got a toolshed 50L 13CFM belt driven compressor, a W400 IWATA, a .8mm Finixa and a whole bunch of paint prep gear all for less than half of what it would have been brand new. I got 2L of DeBeer paint from LinkUp paints for $328 (ouch), which turned out to be more than i needed. Sanding down the rusted stone chips Leveling the paint with filler A couple base coats later Note mistake number 1 and 2 of many - The hard tape line on the pillar and not removing the rear window. In order to remedy the result of this, I came back 2 weeks later and removed the window, and did the blending into the roof properly like I should have done initially. Scuffed up the new clear coat and remedied any defects I could find while I was there. Also took the time this time around to do the entire rear of the car, as well as the boot lip area. Should protect it from rust for a bit with how many coats went on. You might notice a car next to the BMW covered in drapes. Its my dads 1962 Jaguar S-Type. Very nice. Another task which was massively satisfying was cleaning off the old glue to install the new bonnet foam. Prepsol did a wondrous job of it and made short work of the old adhesive. Cant forget the little black square. It didn't line up with anything for me, so on it went. Looks smashing! Because the Z3 rack had been sitting in my garage since September, I wanted to get it in. Draining the old PS fluid was well overdue as it had turned into a black viscous oil, fargone from the nice red ATF it was meant to be. I tried bending the e30 pipes to match the new angles, but cocked it up and ended up just getting some teflon fittings and braided Dash-6 hose. Wasn't cheap, the new pipes cost me $405, which was mostly the right angle fittings. Im going to need new boots With that all sorted and a new outer tie rod, I went for a wheel alignment, which has been on my to do list since I got the car. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that something was amiss. The wheel alignment went fine, but when driving, the car will pull to one side after a hard turn. If the hard turn is left, the car will not re-center and instead pull to the left like it is misaligned. If the hard full lock turn is to the right, it will pull to the right. The only thing I can think of is the strut top mount bearings being shot, which was also suggested by the gentleman at the tyre shop. So I ordered all of the required bits from Schmiedmann Because the rear of my transmission has let a lot of oil out, Im going to replace the rear seal as well.

Is it worthy of a picture for the extra lols?

Or fail to inspect it at all! And end up with a car you really didn't need. 🀣

Sorry to hear. Personally, if it were me, I would just roll with it. Still seems like a reasonably cheap car? Cheers

Too right, missed badly repaired structural rust in the A pillar on a car I recently bought just because it was raining. Got it home, in the garage where it was dry and "ah, sh*t."
  13. 1 point
Is it worse than you thought? Yes. Is it still a good project but at what you paid? Still yes. look in the bright side, it’s a good long term project for you. Every project car has hidden gremlins in it, so don’t beat yourself up over it. Lesson is: never, ever inspect a car in the rain. It hides too many possible issues and getting wet makes you rush and miss things.

Wow, that is a sharp price, even as you say if there's some work to be done. Indications are that it's been used hard but if you're a home mechanic looking for a manual 130i you probably can't go wrong at that price. Heck, even if you had to spend $3k on it I reckon you're coming out ahead. I don't care for miles these days, on a 10+ year old car it's all about care and maintenance. Edit: that front bumper extension needs to see the inside of a skip. Novel approach but, no.

Pretty stink situation, was also in one myself with a recent purchase. Paint and panel condition worse than photos and descriptions suggested. Had to get the car transported to me rather than picking up due to lockdowns. If i had picked up i would have tried to renegotiate the price. had send a polite email about it and got no response. As expected, my problem now..

I don't think they have ever been easy to come by... 😁

My 2 bits. You had it inspected, so it's your problem if it's not what you expected. Your inspection guy should have caught these things, clearly he didn't take the time/care you expected. Granted the seller was not exactly forthright, but when buying a car with 300,000 kms there's always going to be issues. Also, it's only $1300... a pittance in BMW terms. Your answered your own question in your post... suck it up, I'm afraid πŸ™‚

While pretty shitty on behalf of the guy selling it, if you got it for $1300... Id say thats still a reasonable price, its a lot of (dented) car for the money. You could probably part it out and double your money.

The only real worry for me would be that rust in the roof. Thats a solid bubble that will probably be a hole if you poked it too hard. I would also be real wary about driving it too far in its current condition, but thats just me. I dont think its ever going to be a "nice" car again, it wouldnt be worth it, but it should be a good work horse/family wagon with some work.

INPA will allow you do do that, or BimmerLink (not BimmerCode) but I'm not sure if 'Link works without 'Code, you may nee both. I have INPA and cable you could try, unless you've moved you're just down the road from me IIRC.

That's a bugger Cam, in my mind it now comes down to what you paid for it - do the extra defects mean you just paid over the odds, or do they mean you got ripped off? If it's the former then I'd say you're SOOL, even with the Tribunal, the latter may make a case but then you're tied up with bureaucracy and still might have to fight to get compensation even if you win the case. It's also important to note that you appear to have asked about the "paint" and not the "panels", if that's the case, and the seller is being a dick, then he could probably argue you never asked about the bodywork. Having said that, it doesn't look terrible, eminently recoverable with a bit of time and patience.

You're in the worst possible position. You've paid, the car is yours both financially and from the perspective of legal paperwork. So long as there is no outstanding finance, it is all yours. How long ago was purchase completed? Morally, there is understanding that the vehicle has been mis-sold. Practically, the seller can say it was inspected before purchase.

    I raced a 1995 911 turbo over a 1/4 mile at Avon Raceway in the UK - he ran sub-13s, I did 12.79 @ 129mph. (He was catching me.) I was in a daily driven ex-USAF Chevrolet Custom 10 pickup truck. 😁 Worked LT1 V8, TH350 and B&M shift kit, and nitrous - around 750hp. Later ran with a B&M Magnacharger and 900hp.

Ohhh look something that's not header related !! Got my fictional model badge ready to go on

Huzzah I've completed my scale model of the large colon !! The last tube will unfortunately need a tweak as I had to improvise a little when building it up (only one of the six) and its interfering with a bolt head from the starter motor πŸ˜• It fits if I take the bolt out ... maybe i can weld the starter to the block I managed to crack the secret code of twists and turns needed to get them installed as well which is good news but a little nerve wracking !

Finally completed my little benchtop power supply project !! Will be using this to power the spare gauge cluster I'm using for Arduino development. Its based on a spare ATX PC power supply I had ... a pretty useful up-cycling project !!

Headers are a lot of work it turns out, who would have thought First tube is complete apart from being finish welded at least ... I'm 'ok' with the result. The major learning is that next time I'd probably go with pie cuts instead of the tight 1D donuts. The donuts are only welded one side and if you close the gap you end up with an under sized diameter. So I will have a whole lot of little gaps to fill in at the end πŸ˜• When i get to the tubes for bank 2 it will get a lot harder as the tubes are almost completely made of 1D sections 😭 Anyhow I will be cutting segments for pipe 3 today and hopefully getting some bits tacked together. Pics of where things are at ...

Gents, recently made a purchase of what was to be a bit of a resto project after seeing this post. I was more than happy to pay too much in suspension and drive train parts as I imagined the car had probably been neglected mechanically for some time. However, I specifically asked "What's the paint like? Clear coat peel anywhere?" to which the seller replied "Paint ok for a car hasn't been garaged for the last decade. The odd scratch here and there. The bonnet has been resprayed. The only paint peel I've noticed is on the windscreen pillar." I had a friend who was local to the seller, go and give it a quick once over. It was raining very heavily so my mate couldn't say too much for the exterior. I completed the purchase and my mate went and collected it. Today I received these pictures. I stuffed up. But I also feel that the car wasnt correctly advertised. It doesn't have the original engine (according to workshop receipts), front windows don't operate, rear tailgate doesn't oped, trim snapped and clips all broken from someone attempting to fix tailgate, rear seat vents kicked in, FL wheel bearing noise that sounds like a plane taking off, rar window falls down, front electric seats not working. Had these faults and the large rust spot, dent on the roof and deep scratches been declared, I don't think it would have sold for half of what it did. Flights have been paid, insurance added and ownership papers transferred. I struggle to believe the seller didn't know of these problems. My question is, would it be fair to ask for a refund? Giving the seller the option to offer it to the 2nd highest bidder (a wrecker, so probably doesn't care about the condition of the roof)? If no success there, disputes tribunal? Or do I suck it up and take the loss/lesson learnt. Interested in everyone's opinion, so please chime in.
