6 pointsGreat, good sized BMW meet at Smales farm today, great cross section of cars from E34 wagons, V8 E36, M4 CS, a gang of tuff 135i's and a couple of E30's. New wheels and tyres will be going on Thursday, so one last photo with the Basketweaves on a perfect Sunday afternoon.

3 pointsI’d be surprised if there wasn’t software out there that can be used to overcome 20 year old bmw security systems. Thieves overseas are stealing later model BMW’s and European cars. Sounds like NZ’s scum are starting to catchup.

3 pointsUnderstand your upset about your loss but, that’s a big accusation. There’s plenty of non-BMW people that offer cheap keys, didn’t think it could be one of them? No-one in the NZ BMW network can “create” a key, they are all ordered from Munich using the VIN number. All key new requests are logged through the parts system so it is easy to see if a new key has been ordered for a car should this happen. Would be pretty dumb to lose your job stealing an E46 M3 when there are thousands of more valuable BMWs out there.

2 pointsI got 1/2 way through typing a post about how easy it is to get a key for a BMW that does not belong to you, then thought better of it. Don't want sort of information out there on the internet. From the information provided in the above posts, these crims are more than 1/2 way there already.

2 pointsLet's analyze this some. He (presumably) couldn't sell if for 40k two years ago, so what now? He won't sell it for $55k? What has been gained? Ok, the value of the car has definitely risen, and it can definitely be sold for $40k-$45k today but I think he's still a bit 'ahead of the market', price wise.

2 pointsDon’t think there is anything off with the length of ownership with this one. From memory, current owner purchased early in 2017 from the dealer. That's when I enquired about it as well. Therefore, 5 years is about right. Cheers

1 pointYeah odds are it got towed, but i wouldn't say its a niche area given the information and basic principles still apply to many BMW's and other cars. A professional car thief\auto locksmith has to have a wide range of knowledge and tools given its their job to do this sort of thing.

1 pointHonestly I think he will get 50K+ for it. Higher ks than the first two blue ones which were snapped up for presumably $40K and $50-55K respectively, however it looks to be in better cosmetic condition and is an arguably more desirable spec. I guess the only issue is how many people are realistically looking for an E39 M5, considering there have been 4 total for sale in just over a month? If someone really wanted one they probably snapped up either of the first two. That said, if I could afford it, I would buy it. Love the spec, and it has original plates!!! In my personal opinion, this may be controversial but I think E39 M5s will be 100K+ in the next 5 years. Rare in NZ, NA V8, 400hp, RWD, with a manual. Can't beat it!

1 pointYes your DME will be OBD2, but the rest of your modules will be OBD1/ADS. Have a go are reading the codes in your ABS or ZKE4 (GM4) module.

1 pointSaw that on the carjam and that really pissed me off. I'm quite OCD with original plate combos on NZ New cars since its something you cannot get back once you put a dumb personalised plate on it. Makes me even more mad when the plate has been on there for years like with that M5. Keeping the original combination really completes the car in my opinion. My W8, e34 540i and 207 GTI all are on there original plates. I'm so OCD I actively look for cars with original plates and would pay a premium for it too.

1 pointDecided to have some fun today and do some data logs and 0-100 times (started raining just as I left home :/) Thought I heard some wastegate rattle on start up so decided to try do some logs to see if turbos were leaking boost yet but didn't look too bad, boost was pretty close to target. 0-100 times were very bad, mostly due to the lack of traction and also the fact that the car was on the 95ron map, only targeting about 17.5psi of boost. Best time I managed was 5.8seconds using about 80% throttle, spinning 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear and moving sideways about as much as forwards, will need to try again on dry roads with some better tires, good fun though trying to hold it straight. No check engine light after consecutive pulls though which was nice.

1 pointNew rant. People whose default reaction to any question - any question - about a car, any car, is 'scan it'. No actual knowledge-based suggestion. And typically no help at all with "I get code 68 from my M50B20-equipped E36." (Yes it's a valid suggestion in some cases but there are often more straightforward answers.)

0 pointsHi everyone, I'm writing this topic with sadness and anger at the same time. Just shocked but hoping that putting this out here would be more eyes and ears in seeing my car. Car was parked at Wilson Carpark in Parnell under the cctv camera. Hopefully the police can get the cctv footage and these pricks are found. I didn't know these cars could be stolen without the key, especially that it's an SMG as well. I'm hoping if anyone sees it can let me know. Photos attached. Rang the police and apparently whoever has stolen it has already put in the paperwork to change ownership (i didn't know this was possible). Tried to call NZTA but they are not online till Monday, neither is my insurance company.... wow! Anyway if anyone sees it - likely with different plates now, but it's got black mags and tints. Has a brand new rear bumper and slight dent to rear spoiler and front bumper has curbing damage to both front splitter areas. You help would be appreciated.

I imagine it’s going to get parted out 😡😪 Its in the police register now and on NZTA claims… I give myself 30% recovering it with SMG stuffed and engine blown! 5% chance recovering it without issues. Will see what insurance company comes back with -length before payment, process if found pre-payout/post-payout, what payout if found damaged mechanically etc… I’ve resigned to the fact a good car has been trashed now… thanks everyone. It’s in excusable now if you don’t get a tracker for your car, NZ isn’t that lovely safe haven anymore. I hear Iceland is for that.
