The 'soul' aspect of a car is a funny one because everyone justifies what that is for their own arguments then goes about defending it. I do think though to draw a line somewhere is that it is pretty subjective. Whether you have more cams, or valves or aluminium this and that, or magnesium this and that probably wont mean anything to someone who thinks their TR6 is the bees knees and has more soul in its windshield than your entire E92. Blokes who drive big chevy camaros, shelby mustangs and hellcats probably wont give two whatevers to your carbon fibre composite monocoque construction, your perpex windows, or leather headliners. They probably know full well their machinery is well outdated and that probably adds to their love affair with their vehicles. You can tell people what you want, but you cannot tell people whether their car or their brand of car has soul, certainly not based on some idea that technology somehow comes into the equation. Some people, actually lots of people simply do not give a rats. Does a musclecar like the Camaro have less soul than an M4, its a silly question, but I would hate to put my money on the M4 because of some superiority complex. I might put it this way. The Camaro has come a long way in the last few years and is being recognised as being a decent car, so decent it is getting compared to vehicles it may not have had as rivals not that long ago. The M3/M4 has not been dominant as it once was, and what technological advantages it may have had simply are not enough to overcome the comparisons with "lesser machinery".

small update , nothing on the 328ci (except wife denting the drivers door after borrowing it when the alternator failed in her 330iT ) m3 all road legal now , been driving it around for last few days , goes well , needs some new rear trailing arm bushes , probably didn't help the last owner with his incident . rear wheel steering effect

I think they have lost a little soul. The M3, was once compared to everything as it was just so god damn good. It wasnt just good in it's category, it made it's own...and owned it till...recently. That M3/M4 is not the dominant car in it's category. The Caddy, the Camaro, the Audi, the Merc have all been better somewhere, and even beaten it overall, which never used to happen, it doesnt even get compared to cars outside it category like it used to because, it just isnt that dominant anymore. The Nissan GTR is now that car that gets compared to literally everything and only several years later is it coming up short, but then they throw it at literally everything that has 4 wheels on it. The M5 likewise is not the best in its category either, its not the fastest or the lightest or the anything, they used to put the E39 M5 up against everything as well for the same reason. The 1 series, does well, the 2, forget already, the 3, nope bettered by the Jag at the least, the 4, well its a coupe, the 5 nope more people are buying Mercs and Audi's now, the 6, nope Audi has that dicked too, the grand somethings are nice but peeps dont wanna pay and they came too late although I think they are awesome, the 7 looks really good but the S class looks like its sewn that up and they have a seriously good coupe as well which Bmw does not have. The flippin X6M probably fights better in it's class than any other bmw...and I didnt see that coming...

IMHO BMW(s) lost their soul in about 2004 when electronics became fundamentally more important than mechanics.

Hello every one Daniel here happy to finally join the bimmersport family, now I'll get straight to the point and show you all my cars. But basically I love the e30 series I've been brought up with a BMW loving father who drives an 1993 e36 m3 (NZ new) he's owned it for 17 years & his motorbike is an BMW hp2 which I believe there is only roughly 5 in New Zealand. My cars well my first car was a 1989 BMW 316i which I got in late 2014 with 106,000kms, NZ new with full service history and one owner before me factored manual also alpine white coupe. I got it shipped from the top of the South Island all the way over to here to Auckland. Now my second car which I brought last year & I believe a member here used to own it back in 2011..? "James" is my 1989 NZ new 325i Motorsport with a fully rebuilt m20b25 & stroked to a m20b28 using a m52b28 crankshaft. But sadly this car is an absolute rust bucket, shouldn't of passed its wof's and I brought it of a dishonest guy who was saying he wanted to be as much upfront with the new owner as he could. Recently though I've brought a new donor shell a 318i auto in diamond swatchz (excuse my spelling) which is slowly becoming the new Motorsport but any ways enough talking have a look at my cars :-)

Well I did it. Purchased another car in a hope to replace the Carbon Black M3 which sadly was put to rest earlier this year. I had a huge list, and it seemed that no M3 on the market could potentially tick off the boxes, so I've held on since June hoping one would. But nothing eventuated. So as you do when you're in the market, every new listing of an E46 M3 was sure to be sent to my inbox as it was listed - in the hope something would pop up. And something sort of did around September, but it was 'poverty' pack in my eyes so I didn't think twice. Something made me go back, maybe the wild random dreams about this particular coloured car kept popping into my mind, I'm not sure. But I decided to do a little stalk, run it's built sheet, and would you believe it was DAMN TOPAZ THE WHOLE TIME! Maybe it was the light, the angle, the reflections that made me move past it the first time, but a buildsheet never lies. And so I went on a mission to find out all I could about this little blue topaz M3 situated some few hours away from Auckland. Full Service History. Every little nook and cranny completed, was documented. Nz New. SMG, and in Topaz (Schnitzer colour, personal fav). Went on to dig some more, and found the first two owners of the car, personally knowing one of them. For 11 years it was between two people who only did open road, long distance driving and cared for it better than you might your own child! The first owner took it up to a nice 136kms, and the second to 165km. The lovely guy I purchased it off had driven a mere 3,000kms in the time he had it over 18 months. This car, is just a dime. The paint condition so good it's hard to believe. No dings, dents, scuffs or marks. A few minor stone chips which is to be expected. The interior, not a single lift of the trim, no cracking, wrinkling or anything to fault! This car is hands down in 10x better condition than the old one, the KM's just don't add up to the condition. The next morning (Wed) it was in at Jeff Gray for a PPI (thanks to Greg Hook!) and Fresh WOF. Breezed through it's PPI with not a single thing wrong, every single box ticked. How damn lucky. It was sold. And I picked it up today. Such love. It's perfect. It's better than I could of asked for in regards to condition. I was scared about getting a 'high' milaged M3, but this car just puts my 120km M3 to shame. It's just fantastic. So there you have it folks, I bought another E46 M3 New Post for 'To-do' and 'Done' below.

Watching my nearly 3 year old son go absolutely bananas as an E36 M3 goes full sideways through a corner on the Maioro stage of the Targa Bambina yesterday. World class motorsport less than 4 minutes drive from my home. Sweet!

It's so that it saves your tyres from kerb rash. Instead it will kerb rash your 3k rims instead but save your 3hundy tyres from getting hit. It's for looks obviously, but some of those looks are not going to be complimentary I guess. A little lower is good, a little wider is good, a little more powerful is good...where does it end. Halving your contact patch for me is well past good. Dont worry big meats will come back again I am sure.

I like the paintwork! So, today, the 320d was washed and driven to Mt Wellington so I could have coffee and talk car stuff for a couple of hours. The Merc 500SE - I investigated a graunching brake noise from the front o/s. Turns out that when the PO had some brake work done for the WoF, he was done too. The inside piston has seized solid in the caliper. I can rebuild, of course, but it'll most likely need new seals and possibly pistons which I can get, but they're 2-3 weeks away. There were two manufacturers used for the calipers: ATE, and Bendix (Bosch). Everyone carries ATE parts, so guess which I have? I can get a s/h caliper from the local Merc parts specialist, but even that is ~$250++, and I could buy a whole 500SEL parts car for that. I really don't have space for a SEL. I've got a lovely pair of 4-pot ATE calipers that could suit, if the mounting holes lined up. Sometimes you're a pigeon, sometimes you're a statue. Today I feel I have been both.

Still think it's taking the piss to call a car built in Jan 08 a 2010 car. Would it be worth as much as a 2010 car built in 2010? I don't think so. It's built to 2008 specs, missing any production changes that would have come with a 2010. Oh well, now I know it's something to watch out for when car shopping.

Had a great mini adventure last Thursday with my little lad. Flew down to Palmy and picked up a little manual 320i to use as a daily sight unseen. It didn't miss a beat on the way home and was great fun to drive despite more than 350K kms on the clock, though it did have head gaskets done in the past five years. Paint and bodywork are in okay condition for a near-30 year-old car and the interior is mint apart from a repairable small crack (surprise surprise) on the dash and a rip in the fabric on the driver's side seat bolster. No plans to do much with it other than keep it running for the foreseeable future while the 8er uses up any discretionary spend. I have purchased a new gear knob to replace a horrible fake CF one that is clinging loosely to life. Wouldn't mind lowering it an inch or so but not in any hurry. Photos from our trip home.

The year of the car is determined by the date of its first registration, not the build date.

Hi guys, some of you know i travel all over the north island already, always ex-WGTN with an empty van. Have just started selling my services in Christchurch, and got confirmation today so will be heading there in two weeks (14-17) Taking a pretty well empty van down so if anyone has something bulky to get across the cook straight let me know. Moving forward, certainly won't be as regular as my WGTN-AKL runs or elsewhere in North island as not an ongoing contract, but keep it in mind, may have signed something by the time you need something shifted!

Love the whole thing ... Im a sucker for mesh + stepped lips. Very very well done. The cool thing is when you want a change you can just do something to the centres and boom new car.

Another video that amazed me. An M3 slower than a front wheel drive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3n7zhb7aN8 And for a Ron; a Dinosaur Clunker lapping faster than a Nissan GTR a technological tour de force. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqkyWhVBSKU

Finally got around to finished the mounts off. Engine sitting all on its own and fits pretty well, very minimal space but enough to work with. Brake booster relocation done and mounted, just need to get the ABS module mounted and then connect all the lines up. Will hopefully get the wiring finiahed and ready for fluids and start up be end of next weekend.

Trouble is, most of those buyers are getting them through car yards on finance. No argument on depreciation either, E39 M5 is the same as the E36 M3 - now is the cheapest you'l probably ever get one for. It will sell sooner or later - plenty of people can see it for what it is

I'm not laughing to hard.. Promise...rofl. That Winkle paint looks great. Will have to get some for the 740. And that engine looks clean Not bad for a car of that mileage.

Gave the E30 a bit of a clean over the long weekend. There's a lot wrong but there's also a lot right and she's scrubbed up pretty well for an old girl, plus it was a beautiful afternoon for a wee drive and some photos.... And I do love my photos!! I've got some shorter springs and a LHS tail light (current is cracked and half full of water) plus a proper gear knob on its way which I'll fit as soon as possible but beyond that I'll just be taking care of any maintenance issues for the time being. Priority is still to get the 8er's rusty sun roof and sagging headlining sorted.

Finally, a car you can do a skid in and afford to drive it home

Very convincing. The springs I got are lows not superlows so I'm hoping it's not quite that!! I like the wheels to fill the arch not vanish inside them.

The Grom Bluetooth kit is a good option. Factory look with Bluetooth, works with steering wheel buttons for skipping tracks. That's what I put in my 328i. Was ~$140 purchased online from the US and shipped via Youshop.
