Much to my surprise, considering everything that could be an obstacle, was indeed an obstacle, I retrofitted cruise control today. I went in thinking I'd just double the 1 hour suggested time ... I ended up getting very little else done today! What could have gone wrong: Communications errors with modules Airbag took ~40 mins to unclip (the most retarded solution BMW could have imagined) All reinstalled and I'd failed to centre the slip ring, very lucky I was careful turning the wheel before I realised Take it all back off again to centre slip ring Coding instructions I had didn't match the software I had Unable to code to DSC module But in the end, after fighting with NCSExpert (mostly in German) and basically spamming every option I could find I brute-forced my way through. You need to code the vehicle option to the CAS module and then update the DCS module. The CAS completed successfully multiple times, the DSC not at all, Christmas tree dash (and 26 stored errors ?). Fortunately the calibration of the steering wheel angle sensor in ISTA was straight forward (I needed to do it twice, seems common) but still Christmas tree dash. After calibration I cleared the errors and only one left which was "DSC Module Coding Required" which I sort-of knew but the kick in that direction was motivating because I'd had so many failed updates to random modules earlier I assumed I'd royally screwed up a whole bunch of things. Back into NCSExpert and I just winged it really, selected DSC wherever I could and spammed CODIEREN on every screen possible. Once I'd exhausted my options I cleared the codes and started the car (with my eyes closed). Tada! Normal dash. I was still completely unconvinced it was working but took it for a drive and how about that, cruise control and no errors/codes/lights. It even comes up as an official retrofit in ISTA. It's a novelty for me really but it's done now (sorry @Driftit - but I did think of your request multiple times today when I was about to give up in despair).

I bought mine just over 6 years ago as the second owner with just on 40k. Previous owner had bought it new to replace his e46 M3 so ticked most options. I used it mainly as a daily to replace an e36 325i which I owned for roughly 10 years. As I’d had the e39 M5 for a while at that point, I wasn’t exactly looking for heaps of power, just something that was quiet, subtle and a little more grown up than the e36. I didn’t even consider the 335i at that point as I thought (at that time) that turbos were cheating and if you need turbos, just get the M3 right? I was to be proven so wrong. So instead I tried a couple of n52 cars (330i, 130i, z4) and was bored. Then, a very tidy silver 335i popped up at the local dealer one weekend. I dropped by and took it for a drive. I think I drove 400 meters up the road and immediately realized this was different. It was not boring at all... It also has a distinctively different sound (which imo sounds exotic) compared to the N52’s, great ride, excellent intuitive gearbox, great steering. If you’re used to the torque the S62 puts down in almost any gear, you will love the 335i. To me it feels V8 athletic without spending so much time at the pump. I liked it so much, and used it so much, I sold my first e39 M5 from it simply never being used... But that’s another story... Anyway. There are probably many better cars that have now replaced it, but anyone who ever got a turn to drive it always came back asking what the hell is under the bonnet.

Hey Team long time no post. Well what can i say, SHE'S ALIVE Finally got the x5 manual swap up and running, its surprisely quick too with the factory 3.91 open diff, was only sitting around 2.3k rpm at 100kmph. Custom x member and shifter rod extended. So just a few more tweaks, the x member needs to be raised 25mm to line up the driveshaft straighter. REst of exhaust fitted but first get the rear mufflers deleted. I also sourced this a while ago while discussing diff options with Kayne Barrie, I saw this on trade me and he said it could work as he had rebuilt it and knew the measurements. a e92 m3 LSD Diff with the flanges changed out to match the x5 ones. I have mounted it up and almost perfect I just need to find some big washers to go in between the front two mounts as you can see picture above, take the drive shaft in to be shorten and it should be home sailing. I did run into some small issues with the car trying to cut out when i was over 50% open throttle at around 4k-5k rpm does any one have any ideas of what this could be? i pressed the dsc button but no change. Also coded out the auto and made it manual so just a bit stumped. Feel free to chime team.

If he's spent that sort of money on it then you'd think he's addressed many of the common failure points and more. To me the main issue with the average 335i on sale here in NZ is lack preemptive repairs; most have next to no service history and are likely on many original parts given the age and k's.

I have owned a tuned 335i for 4 years now and have to say that bang for your buck there are very few cars that can match it. The N54 is now a very well known thing, it has a few weaknesses, charge-pipe, intercooler, HP fuel pump, worn out injectors, carbon buildup in the inlet ports but its a well built engine that if maintained will work well. Dinan tuned cars are pretty old school compared to things like MHD and the boost levels are quite conservative. What's nice is the bigger oil cooler and intercooler, N54s run hot. I am sure the chassis upgrades are worthwhile but not sure if it has an LSD which is one of the best upgrades to any 335i. If you like it buy it.

Time frame isnt an issue, and you may even have to leave it sitting a while to make sure the car goes to sleep before you get an accurate reading. Just do not try and crank the engine.

While I await the cars return with a new transmission costing twice the value... I've finally made a start on refurbishing the style 66's now that that house painting is largely behind me... bring on more garage time...

Yeah, a 330i is definately a better bet with 40hp / 55nm more than a 325i and likely similar fuel economy... Keep a look out.

Here she is the new E91 335i Wagon. Scrubbed up well. Need a few interior parts to tidy it up but over all I couldn’t be happier!

Seems like too many compromises for a silver sedan TBH - quick check on FCP Euro shows a new ABS module is $$$$ I don't think I've seen leather seat covers that look good, but then I'm pedantic with my interior. If you don't mind a sedan there are some pretty decent looking 325i's available for in around the $4K mark. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/bmw/325i/listing/2833264388?bof=6vmvu87R https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/bmw/325i/listing/2776390425?bof=6vmvu87R https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/bmw/325i/listing/2826267739?bof=6vmvu87R

Hey Team long time no post. Its been a while but things still have been trucking along in the background, mainly trying to get these side project cars finished and flicked off which some of you may have seen on trade me. But good news is ive finally got some subframe plates lazer cut out and got them semi folded into shape on the chassis and then welded. Once done i can get onto refitting the m3 rear end and piecing the car back together. So slight change of plans again. I will now be fitting the M62tub46 motor into the Blue sedan instead of the e34 wagon. Ill be taking all the dry sump setup from the m60b44 and all associating bits ie exhaust headers and engine mounts and using it with this motor which should be a straight swap, i'll will also try retro fitting the x5 4.6is dash into the e46 too. The M60b44 will be reused in my e34 wagon project instead with a superchager ontop Lastly also managed to score this puppy from a mate ( thanks Quinn) A 6 speed for the swap as well as it really needs the 6th gear due to it using so much petrol on highway driving. Will hope to get this car together hopfully by the end of the year.

Yeah, i did. My guy uses some wuurth stuff, took hole day tho, can't see anyone moaning about this result.

You could also try a chemical valve cleaner as well like CRC valve cleaner.

Not sure what the Dinan badging means to sales or collection values. Looking at magazine article, turbos would appear to be stock, so would have, unless updated, the usual, N54 wear, wastegates, thrusts, bearing issues, etc. Heaps of options now for N54, turbos in US are cheap and much stronger, so don't be put off by maintainance. I have owned a few BMWs, but nothing as satisfying as my 335 E91. If the price is right, go for it.

Euro4 emissions level is the lowest you can bring in, which this version of the 330d doesn’t meet. So you would need to wait for it’s 20th Birthday in a year or so, then it’s into a different category imports wise. If it’s $30k then forget it, doesn’t make sense even before you add on the shipping costs. Strange it’s on a Japanese site, but the car is in London.?

Im always wary of cars with such low miles. Whats it been doing all its life and what maintenance hasn't been done. Whats going to break if you suddenly start to use it more? It also works out to about $30k NZD before shipping and taxes? Not what i'd spend that money on tbh

Great car. One of the best of its era. Very very understated/stealth in standard spec. Pretty amazing value these days too. Feels modern even by today’s standards. Great fuel economy too. The longer wheel base means they ride well. IMO the e92 shape is one of the all time great looking BMW coupes. I owned one up until recently (still in the family) and miss it a lot. Get to drive it from time to time and instantly smile. There are heaps of great DIY’s out there to remediate the common problems. Mine hasn’t skipped one beat in 50kms of ownership.

Tech 1 lover here too! When I bought my tech 1, there were two tech 2s for sale. The Tech 1 just looks so much more classy. But if I was searching for a touring - tech 2 kit for sure. What are your plans with the Tech 1 convertible? I hope you can put it back on the road.

Don't they look good together... The straight at Ruapuna seemed like a nice spot to park.. Finally had time to stick on the OEM spoiler, and give it a good wash. Fitment was absolutely perfect. Why did I waste my time with that knock-off crap... Blacked out kidney grill: Spoiler + blacked out diffuser:

Engine oil and filter changed, 6.5 litres of Penrite. Stereo holder frame welded up and painted Matt black, ready to go back in. Finally used my 3D printed BMW engine oil funnel, it doesn't fit the M5, turns out it doesn't properly fit this either, needs some slight trimming...

Ive got a ACS front lip off my old car you can have if you like, it's painted in Orient as well but got a crack in the fibreglass repair the PO did. I can probably drop it off when i go upto Auckland.

Success, managed to get the trans to swallow another 0.5 litre! Also finished welding and tidying the stereo surround, and made a hole in it for the boost gauge, it will get powder coated with black wrinkle powder, if I get bored I may try and fit a cup holder in the bottom section, but not today...

painted the front bumper, very badly, it is now all the same color but that is about the best thing I can say about it! Also painted some headlight eyebrow things I had left over from my previous e39. The obligatory run in the clear coat that reminds me how impatient I am!!

Never bought into the whole 'shouldn't sold of because they are worth x amount now', too many shortcomings I view the situation as 'should of owned one because they were cheap and readily available at a time you could afford one'

Flicked a coat of 2 pack primer on the front bumper, a few more small patches of putty and a sand then top coat this weekend, it won't be perfect but I'm not aiming for perfection on this one, its a workhorse not a show pony! The transmission service might be a bit more urgent than I thought, it wouldn't back the car off the ramps today until I rocked it back and forth a couple of times!!
  39. 1 point
Not too much to report of late except it is in having the transmission completely rebuilt with original ZF parts - which kinda makes this thing a definite long termer lol... weep ... lol... I've also collected a pile of engine oil gaskets and driveline parts for when it gets home... The interior is all updated to the aluminum / blue stitch look, and road wheel (66's) refurb is getting underway, the new tyres await...

if anyone wants an M3, they will need to compromise in certain areas at the very least. in some cases its going for a higher mileage example, or going for a different colour other than first choice, or one that has been re-registered for whatever reason. This one has probably been tracked and it is what it is. Its the owner's choice to do with it how they want and to sell it to the next interested person is their prerogative. If it has been maintained whilst being tracked then I dont personally see any reason its any worse off than other examples. Like I said earlier, being a 2005, sunroof, black with red interior, lower kms etc make it a nice candidate for my boxes being ticked and if I had to compromise on possible tracking history then so be it. Anyone who doesnt want to touch a tracked car can and will find something else and that is their choice, just like it is yours to make a comment about your old beloved car - so no judgement there. Only issue I see is if people take it to a personal level and create drama, thus causing a bad reputation for the forum that we all use so lets just keep it civil and move on. Keep the comments civilized guys. And on topic lol.

So was thinking last night and have mentioned i will be keeping the touring factory but would like abit more grunt as it is alot heavier than the sedan and you do notice it in the power department. SO what you guys think of this its a m60b44 with a jag xjr eaton m112 supercharger set up modded to fit. looks so clean and meant to fit in.

It's a SSG/SMG manual. But its emissions standard will be too low to import.

I am chasing a similar issue in mine, apparently some of the keyless entry modules can fail preventing the car from going to sleep, but I haven't dived into it too deeply, I had some serious wiring issues in my tailgate loom, but have fixed those, I have also replaced a faulty alternator regulator and my IBS/ earth cable, which needed doing but haven't fixed all the issues!
