For what it's worth I went through this last year and I have to be honest I'm surprised at the canning the 3.0 petrol is getting. To be fair I have no intention of towing anything and I was on a pretty restrictive budget. We just needed something bigger for our family. I'm 6'5, my wife is 6' and you can guess how tall the kids are if we struggle to fit into an e39. I've owned e39 528's, 530's, 540's and an e38 740 and was only ever interested in the 3.0 petrol knowing what it costs to maintain an M62 and what it costs to fix if it goes wrong. I would have loved a diesel but the premium was too great. I picked up a mint 2003 with 180k kms and a folder full of service history for under 10k. Any diesel equivalents had done well over 300k kms and were closer to 15k. My 535is now sits in the garage, my wife drives the e39 to work and I drive the X5 on the 600km weekly motorway munching for the kids sport. You don't buy an X5 to drag others at the lights and the 3.0 petrol has more than enough grunt. We drove to Hastings and back from Otaki two weeks ago, with all five of us and the boot fully loaded and I could still overtake with ease. It's a brilliant cruiser. I've had it three months and it's returning 11.2l/100km. My e34 is in the 12's and the e39 the 9's. It's an absolute dream to drive and I only wish I'd bought one years ago.

Right collected tonight, They fixed the gasket issue and refilled, checked everything and then removed the controller, grounded it all, validated ok. Reinstalled and ran around for over a day, no issues. All warranty and with a smile, can't complain on that aspect, we'll see how it goes from now on, hopefully all sorted.

Are comments on the price and worthiness of the part or vehicle here in the for sale section really necessary? This guy in good faith lists his car and gets nothing but grief for it. This is not conducive to a proactive and inviting forum......having received "irregular" comments on my recent for sale listing I don't get it.... Certainly makes me think the OP, like me, would think twice about posting anything for sale but basic parts here again and that is a pity for what is overall a good forum. OP good luck with the sale, for your own (and my future) benefit, I hope you achieve top dollar for your Dakar e36 M3

I would just like to give the cops some credit, at least the ones I came across were fair and gave me a chance to slow down after finishing a passing manoeuvre instead of being a trigger finger. I had two flash their headlights until I was back under 100km/h and then let me go on my way.

So after reading this thread I'm guessing that I will have zero luck getting the Police to reconsider a 112kph speeding ticket issued in a passing lane last week? I was quite disappointed as the officer and I had a friendly discussion, and although he agreed that despite my immediately returning to 100 after passing, and not doing anything unsafe he just gave me the "well it was kind of bad luck to be you - here is your ticket attitude" I really think that the demerits for using a passing lane for its intended purpose are more than a little excessive. It just strikes me as entrapment when they are all camped out on their revenue gathering blitz. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Defs going to Ray, cant beat a z3 shifter for $100, but need to suss a DSSR first so i can do all that in one go. But M20 goodness! They have this allure to them, i dont know what it is but i like them. Simple and sound good haha

lets face it, the E36 is the redhead stepchild of the M3 range.... itll only be survived by a few dedicated collectors, and wont be a car people swoon over like the E30. Im all for as many original ones surviving as possible, but they just arent as loved as any other M3 in the lineup. The E30 is the one people lust over, the E46 is the one people want to drive, and the newer ones are less fun:dollar ratio. The E36 is the one people buy either because they specifically want one, or its the only one they can afford. Anyway, just my opinion.

Totally agree with you Martyn on the 3.0i. I drove one before buying the V8 and it was not lacking at all. We actually had it overnight and almost bought it. The only reason we got the V8 was because it was tidier and had more service history. I do like the sound the M52 six makes. They aren't by any means lacking and when you compare to similar sized/weighted vehicles such as a previous generation Toyota Highlander etc they are excellent value for money and perform and likely handle better. I only wish I never bothered with the Land Rover and Pajero.

I love meguiars, and the story on how the company became successful is pretty cool too. If you use the separate mequiars wash and waxes you will get an even better result.

Sadly, I'd suggest your chances are nil, or worse. It may be worth trying the "car in front was doing 85 and sped up" line, but I doubt it'll wash. I've talked about officer discretion in issuing a ticket, but I get the impression they have been told they will not exercise any. If you're really lucky when you're pulled for 120+, you may get an officer who is prepared to reduce the figure you were stopped for. This will reduce the fine and number of demerits applied.

Ever seen the chart showing how the price of fuel is broken down according to the costs? About 2/3 was tax and excise collected by various governments IIRC.

Zimbabwe88 - There have been two main pieces of advice in this thread; (A) chuck in a cheap used auto trans. or (B)do an engine and trans swap with the m54 I have in my parts car. I cant afford the money or time to do the m54 swap, much though I would prefer it. So I will be buying a cheap used auto to swap in, and while I try and scrape some money together to buy one I am flushing the one I have to get a month or two's usage out of it. I already had bought a bunch of parts (the day before the trans crapped out ironically) to do some planned maintenance on my car, so am doing them at the same time where it makes sense to do so. I really DO value the advice from the community. I even had one member (who I had never met in person) offer to come and look at the car the very next day. I've had offers of free or discounted parts, and another forum member has spent several days helping, including driving to Albany to pick up parts while I'm at work. This community has really blown me away

Don't be mean guys. His situation is shitty enough. He's heard the advice and told us all he has limited options. Some times you just need to throw money at a short term solution based on circumstances.

Rain today so no building swimming pools....instead did oil and filter on E46 328i, Valve cover gaskets, installed Powerflex bushes. First drive noticed smoother, tighter steering, and no diving to the side under braking which is what i wanted. Definitely not harsher. My left hand bush was going soft, the right side one was ok so very happy with the result so far. Thanks Glenn for advice and easy buying.

If theyre a turqouise coloured spring they are most probably dobi springs. spring pads wont effect anything except grip the springs and stop them from spinning. otherwise you can take your springs out and have them compressed that little bit more would be your easiest options

I have, for the most part, found Ron's posts to be very knowledgeable and helpful, as opposed to your pointless and misguided opinions scattered all over this poor forum. If you have no first hand experience with the the X5 then pipe down and have some respect for the OP and the people who know what they're talking about.

recaro rails are easiest to buy with the sliders from NZKW, Z3 shifter contact HellBM they do a good deal for Bimmersport members, instead of worrying about the m20 should just buy my M50 conversion its all ready to go!

Safer cars, safer roads and better driver education will all make more of a difference than a 4km/h tolerance. There is absolutely no (as in zero: pun intended) data to prove a lower threshold makes any difference whatsoever. They're even talking about increasing the speed limit beyond the 4km/h threshold on some roads. Some of these are roads where the threshold is enforced the most. That makes a mockery of the threshold. The 4km/h threshold is a revenue collection joke.

That was interesting, just read the motorcycle crash data. I assume car data is similar in the way that it's always the drivers fault (or another driver). Road conditions aren't considered at all. The crash I saw happen the other week that involved 3 motorcyclists go off the road would probably come under "motorcyclist veered off road / lost control" no mention of or taking into account the tar bleed and gravel all over the road mid corner on a blind corner.

There is talk of raising certain newer roads to 110 based on newer 'safer' roads. But also talk of lowering others. People should stop fiddling and just concerntrate on advanced skid training, tires and suspension. Problems solved. That and banning ling longs / triangles

some years back I had safely driven my family back from a holiday in Auckland. We'd had an excellent run down, leaving a wet Auckland early - may have been ANZAC day? Got all the way to a warm, sunny and dry Porirua without incident, though on straight 3-lane piece of road I encountered an old Hilman Avenger Wagon, tail well-down (overloaded) towing a weaving trailer with bald tyres... doing 100-105. I know this, as I was following him in the second lane travelling behind him. I indicated right, moved into the 3rd (outside lane), and pased him doing 114 ( I know this, as it was police verified). I was nabbed by a policeman with laser gun sitting at the end of the straight, and motioned to pull over. We had a cordial discussion. I offered that I had no issue about the speed he'd clocked me at, and accepted he would give me a ticket. We talked about my journey down from Auckland; he was interested in what time I'd left and did the mental calculation on how long it had taken me and satisfied himself that I'd had a reasonable trip. I said "I have a question for you, officer. in my well-maintained Maxima, why did you choose me, driving 14km/h over the speed limit, rather than the driver next to me with the dangerously laden car weaving and towing a trailer with bald tyres, exceeding his speed limit by 25km/h?" His was the stock answer: "you can't know how fast he was going, yours is an estimate only". I replied "yes I do - I followed him for nearly a kilometre before deciding to pass, in order to avoid the road hazard he presented; our speeds were matched. Now, please, can you help me understand why did you choose to pull the driver presenting the lesser hazard to other road users? I'm not arguing the ticket; I'd really like to understand." "Well, the laser gun has a narrow lens. I focus on the outside lane to catch the greatest speed" "Ahhh, so you're focussed on the number plates of the cars in the outside lane?" "Yes" "and you didn't see the orange Avenger on the inside lane, because while you're hunting speeders and looking through that laser gun you're focussed on one lane only?" "that's right." "Well, thank you for your honesty officer, have a good one." "you too sir, travel safely" As I said, it was a cordial, and indeed respectful conversation. Clearly this passive road policing by sitting "catching speeders at the end of lanes" contributes nothing to road safety. As I mentioned, I had no issue with a ticket for 14km/h over; it was what I was doing. It was the indiscriminate and non-sensical nature of the "policing" in this instance that underscored to me that they "have it wrong".
