6 pointsRemember the good old days, when a 320 was a 3-series with a 2.0 engine? A 540 was a 5-series with a 4.0 engine? And so on...? The six-cylinder 335i is now the 340i. The four-cylinder 328i is now the 330i. The 320i designation makes sense and stays. Power increases by 1 HP to 181 HP, but torque is up to 214 lb-ft. The 328i with it's 2.0 4-cylinder engine also gains power, up to 249 HP, but torque remains the same at 258 lb-ft. This means the 328i will be now called the 330i (except in the US where it remains the 328. The 335i is renamed the 340i, and also gets more power, up to 326 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque. It’s still a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six (albeit a new engine, the B58). Diesels don't escape either. For example, the 2.0 180 HP, four-cylinder 3-series is the 328d. There's more, but my head hurts. Oh well... It's just numbers.

3 pointsNo doubt some of you will have seen my other threads. I'm starting a new one here to document where I started and my progress on this car. Mostly as a record for myself but you all should feel free to chime in with your thoughts as well.. Car was purchased without viewing. All I knew was it was a 1999 750i and I wanted it bad. lol I was told over the phone it was a repo and wasn't running and has 240,000kms on the clock. Picked the car up in Hamilton from Turners on the 5/05/15 and towed it home to Wanganui. I bought it as a non runner and knew I'd taken a bit of a gamble. I won..lol. I checked the water and oil then put a new battery and some gas in it yesterday and on the second crank it fired up.. Took it for a little drive up and down the road and it ran super smooth. So it got a quick wash then off to the testing station. FAIL.. Right hand tie rod bent. Some genius must have towed it from there. So because of that the Steering angle sensor has gone off and its permanently got the DSC warning light on. Right side head light is dim. Checked and the cap that holds the bulb in is broken. Passenger side rear shock is leaking. Rear seat belt wouldn't click in. Fixed. I couldn't do a lot else mechanically till I get the parts so I started cleaning it out. My first impression on seeing pics of that blue interior wasn't good. Then when I noticed it had a leather center console I felt a bit ripped off. I mean seriously, wood's key in E38's..lol After talking to some other E38 enthusiasts on other forums I've realized that no one has EVER seen a leather console before. And also after seeing the Blue in person I have to say I really like it. There are a lot of other features that make this car stand out a bit more. Like the wood inlay, vanity headrests and picnic tables on the back of the front seats. It seems to have a lot of options that you don't normally see. So I was poking around under the bonnet and found this which explains a lot. So this car just keeps throwing up nice surprises..lol Not only is it rare just being a 750i it's also an Individual. You know your keen when your out in the rain giving your car a wash..lol Then it was into the garage for a vacuum and start cleaning the interior. The leather cleaner I bought is really doing the trick. From this. To this. And this. Once I've finished cleaning up the interior I'll move onto giving this a good groom and oil change. Theres a lot that needs doing. The Silver hides a lot in the pics. It really needs a new paint job and has a couple of small dents and some surface rust in 2 spots and the clear coat is lifting on the bonnet. I think the previous owner might have live near the ocean. All the Chrome is pitted and nasty looking so it will all need to be replaced or re chromed. The 750i badge will definitely need to be redone. I don't think I'd be able to find another one of those. CD changer wont eject the case and it doesn't recognize it even has a CD player on the dash. Thats ok cause it would seem the Amp has blown as well. If you turn on the radio it just screeches at you. Boot lid open warning comes up on the dash even though the boot is closed. I'm hoping thats just a switch. In any case, I'm super happy. I've got a very cool project to play with for the foreseeable future.

3 pointsTake daughter to hospital on a Friday night, no pi$$ed people, no fight victims, no abusive addicts, no long queues. Great doctor works out her condition quickly , sorts breathing issues to manageable level and we get to take her home on the same evening.

3 pointsI like the little sections that give the rear a flat floor with the seats folded... a lot of modern manufacturers could learn a thing or two. Cool car. Someone buy it and put a 13B in it.

3 pointsHopefully not a divorce lawyer, after all my wife is younger than me, better looking by far and earns more money than me, plus she secretly likes BMW's she just doesn't want to admit it publicly. Now all I have to do is find replacement trim for the E46 as I am not a big faux wood fan and perhaps some bilsteins or Konis and some 18'a nd some Pirellis and some ......................

2 pointsSo at the behest of my wife I sold my Jap import E36 325i and it left me with my "Project" 93 325i coupe and as I always seem to be doing something to it I just don't get to drive it very often. Turners had a 96 318is coupe on a dollar serve so I had a bid and got it for a grand, its not bad had a leaking oil filter boss and worn front bushes but pretty cheap to fix them, and of course it was Silver so it matches my hair. My wife gave me that look that says I am not impressed but I ignored and said the car was actually for my boy, so that was ok. Then perchance I saw a 330ci advertised on TM for 4k. Now 4k 330ci's are not common so I rang him and he said just got back from holiday and I have a lot of messages re the car but come and have a look if you like. I had a drive and noticed a leaking valve cover but no other major concerns so I shook hands on it. Now 5 weeks later I am actually going to pick it up, I thought the seller was a bit dodgy as he wouldn't return my calls but he said he had to get a new transponder key from Germany so I could lock the car. If it is dodgy then I can always ell it as a parts car, car Jam says it has no money owing on it and the owner is the first NZ owner so fingers crossed km's are 180. My wife is unimpressed, but I am happy and after all I feel thats whats most important.

2 pointsIt might be rare and collectible but still looks like a Austin Maxi to me.

2 pointsGlad you've decided to keep the blue interior. Love it or hate it (and I love it) the original Individual interior will make the car something special in the long run!

2 pointsI have an E34 530i manual (with 4.0l now). My Co. car is a new Nissan Juke cvt jobbie. My theory is that during the week, I drive a very civil, quiet, non offensive, nonchalant unassuming vehicle (some may say hideous) that is designed to go from A to B, using piss all fuel attracting next to no attention minding its own business. When I refuel, I hope out, pay, hop back in drive, repeat. Come the weekend, I do the opposite, and I am literally dying for the analog experience. I sit in the car, and absorb for a minute. I turn the key, and actually hear the fuel pump whirring, and all of the other machinations rising like a symphony before the explosion that is called my rear box delete, its rough at first whilst it is clearing its throat and settles from an idle some 1100 to 800, before I careful adjust my psyche to suit. It is an experience that I never tire from due to previous few days of civil (some say boring) transport. I would go the E34 for the rush, but that's just me. It's like everything else, during the weekend I wear bare feet, it's good for me.

1 pointSeems right ... its cheaper than say an Rx3 or GTO. spot rust is normal on cars of that age .. its a good sign it means its been used which is better than something sitting around for that price with un-told mechanical issues. Remember an m325i is commanding 15k upwards these days.

1 pointSubscribed to rescue of this beast. Quite like the blue interior, it's unusual. Is it an m73 donk?
-
1 pointSo cool and unique. Glad it is all salvageable. Good to see it will be rescued.

1 pointCool - what do you get it for? I have an e38 and it has really got under my skin.......I still like it a lot after 9 years of driving. You are lucky to have a standard wheelbase 750 individual. Parts should be cheap if you rob poverty spec versions like mine...... Keep the updates coming. I don't think the e38 is on the radar at the moment but I think it has cruiser classic potential.....
-
1 pointHmm... Miss M wanted something unusual. This is only 10x what I was thinking of spending, and has none of the modern safety features that might be desirable. Other than that - perfect! Really nice cars though. I had use of one about... hmm... 28(?) years ago. Great fun to drive.

1 pointM3 housing is already aluminium, the rest will be upgraded including a new thermostat. End links were about US$25 each from FCP Euro, obviously shipping on top of that. You can get them in NZ for not much more, I added them to a pre-existing order. This will be my first (my mate's lasted 240k kms) and yes the replacement has a metal impeller. I have no idea what's in there, it's not given me a problem, this is preventative maintenance. I'm debating whether to remove the front bumper and radiator support to make the job real easy and allow me to really clean up in there or whether that's more of an effort than the job itself? Accessing the 3rd water pump bolt on the S50 is slightly difficult but on the other hand my radiator support may be spot-welded on.

1 pointNewer engines and fuel systems are designed with ethanol blends (and other fuels) in mind, so have different materials in the seals, etc. Plus you will have less crap build up in the lines tank, etc. being a newer car - so there is less stuff for the ethanol to attack and therefore clog things up with it. Certainly its good for power and torque increases (on pretty much any engine) but unfortunately there are draw backs for those running older systems.

1 pointDon't get me started on how cars drive, honestly, this means nothing to her, she rated the 2014 i20 she is driving as the best car she has ever driven, so there is the benchmark, and I have driven it, its all sorts of sin. Mondeo's are great to drive, in fact, if you fitted some decent 235's to one I actually think it would leave some "enthusiast" cars behind, the diesel is a banger! And they are HUGE! Banging SONY stereo, I like them. But Euro Fords don't have the best name in longevity... in saying that, nor do Renaults and they are the most reliable cars I have ever owned. Not really my missus, lady friend with benefits who is mates with my mates who knows zero about cars... if she didn't know anyone I knew I would tell her to buy a BMW, that way when we break up I get the last laugh.
-
1 pointJust wasted a couple of hours at Turners trying to buy the missus a new car.. end result was that they cost the same there as they do on TM and only marginally cheaper than a dealership. So. Where are the bargains at these days? Are there Auctions for dealers or people with cash? There must be as there is literally nothing on the bone if you buy at Turners.

1 pointEveryone seems to have forgotten about the Integra that ran a type R gearbox in season one and got away with it, he did also provide catering for the final round. Starting to see a theme here.... The majority of the people in 2KCUP will take free food over integrity of the rules(this is proven when we vote for penalties), because everyone knows what a real $2k car is, who have spent mega bucks and who is just having a bit of cheap fun.
-
1 pointVery very eloquent Lionel. You captured the true essence of what a person feels when they have a love for something dear to them in a way that not many other people can understand well done ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

1 pointThe Silvia was a genuine $2k purchase that needed a few things tidied up, in saying that we give a bit of slack for people who are racing in the series for the fun of it. We take great pride in our integrity and we were not swayed by the fact his family also catered the last round free of charge, we are not suckers for free food so make sure if you ever need a food truck you contact https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hungri-Hunter-Ltd/299962780017228 because it was a damn fine feed. Ok, maybe our integrity goes out the window when you put on catering at the final round

1 pointI wouldn't put it quite like that - there are still a few years left in the E30s yet, with literally 100s of eligible race cars around, but yes there are fewer cars left to build up into a race car now. The planning process is already underway in terms of where to go next with the control series, looking at possibly E46 or E90 as the new base cars.

1 pointdont forget somethings get blown out of proportion on the internet. The V8 rattly chain guides i have seen enough of that i know its a fact, but other things you really need to question. every engine (and car for that matter) ever built by any manufactuter is a piece of crap if you read enough.
-
1 pointAn oil change and resealed the cam covers, but only cause I took them off to paint. Oh and disassembled the starter and cleaned it out. Had a bit of a noise... Anyway, has about 270000 ks on and seems strong as a, um, strong thing. No idea on history of repairs though as nothing came with the car (it was only $1600). It's not the tu engine mind.
-
1 pointThey don't work. Put your left hand on the ABS unit.... stick your right hand index finger up your arse and recheck. If that doesn't work first time put your right hand index finger down your throat.

1 pointSJ (EUROHO) fitted the cross pipe for me on Saturday. There was a bit of a hiccup so, unfortunately, it'll need to come off and be straightened (those with sharp eyes will notice the driver's side tips are a bit low) but it has done the business sound-wise and performance doesn't seem hampered in any way. iPhone vid doesn't do it justice but you can hear a touch of exotic now the banks are mixing!
