5 pointsThe reason the cops do this huge delay thing is because on one occasion they were totally incompetent and got told off by a coroner. Now they err on the side of stupidity which they do so with considerable skill. It was their incompetence which caused the issue in the first place now they make us suffer for that. Geeez talk about naive. It's about revenue gathering and finding burglars is not revenue positive. Have you read anything in this thread or do you often miss the bloody point.

4 pointsIn Christchurch Spotted an M325 at BK Yesterday Then jackpot on the way home, E24 635CSI (M6), UNF. Based on the carjam it has both a broken odometer and lives in a shed or somthing... so sad. https://www.carjam.co.nz/car/?plate=GMZ248 Checked the vin and it is running the S38 engine, sure as heck sounded like it anyway.

4 pointsEscalation is probably because I get emotional about this sh*t. I know what "speeding" is and it's got nothing to do with the posted limit. That intelligent people are indoctrinated to believe/accept this dismays me. Speeding can be interpreted as two things: 1. Exceeding the posted limit; or, 2. Exceeding the limit of safe conditions Anybody that thinks #1 is accurate needs to spend a little more time reading. I can easily navigate the Waikato expressway on a fine day at 180km/h without endangering anybody. I accept that if I wreck at 180 the damage will be more than if I do so at 100 but the point is, save mechanical failure, my chances of wrecking at 180 are not more than at 100. Just rolling out a "speed" reasoning strikes me as ignorant.

3 pointsHey guys, I possibly introduced myself previous (about 10 years ago when I bought a 318i), but here goes. Picked up a 2005 E46 M3 (Silver Grey, SMG) a few weeks ago. It's the car I've wanted since I bought my 318i in 2006 :-) First steps are ensuring that the car is solid - it's going for an Inspection II + nose to tail check next week. Anyway - hi :-) Cheers, Matt

3 pointsIf I understand you correctly you were stationary at the time of impact? If so then she hit you... the speed you were travelling before coming to a complete halt seems irrelevant to me. And I'd just stick to that very simple logic, I wouldn't even engage in a discussion on speed "I was stationary" period. Don't contact the husband, talk to the owner of the car you were driving as soon as you can and tell his insurance company that you were hit whilst stationary. Let them sort it out. Sorry to hear this and good luck. Edited because apparently my shift key wasn't working too well...

3 pointsMaybe it's the police version of holiday surcharge? I pay more at the cafe during public holidays too.
-
3 pointsYep crime is dropping because people have learned it is a waste of bloody time even reporting it. The cops need the public to solve crimes. Their revenue grabbing and failures will backfire on them If I am asked by the cops did I see something I will be very selective with my answers. The only person in NZ who loves the cops,4km limits above posted limits and revenue gathering and the government is Nathan. They have a long way to go with their propaganda to brainwash the rest of us who actually think and know what is going on.

2 pointsbut if they were doing 6kph less, they wouldve stayed in their side of the road, and lived! Geez, its not that hard!

2 pointsOh pull the other one. Thats a 12kph combined increase in a head on, it wouldnt make a lick of difference, but its impossible to prove with normal stats because of the variation in car safety features and pure luck. Im with Dave on the whole "speed" thing. In the stats, what criteria makes "speed" a factor, exceeding the limit by a single kph? I find it hard to believe that there are many crashes where speed alone was a factor, where the car was traveling under 20kph over the limit (under 20kph over, there will be other factors, like driver talent running out, bald tyres, alcohol etc). That then becomes excessive speed, which can be dangerous.

2 pointsthe little boy inside of me was super excited while putting the plate into carjam hoping that it was like some special nz new 740/750 in immaculate condition with low ks. i was right about the low ks but that was pretty much it haha.. at least it was debadged lol
-
2 pointsBS. I asked what "speeding" means? In absolute terms 101km/h is "speeding" but that's not going to make a difference at all. So, I ask again, define "speeding". Or, with all respect, stop spouting BS statistics...
-
2 pointsYou sound like you work for them and therefore firmly believe in your indoctrinated stance which as discussed on here is extremely weak under scrutiny, we all agree there has to be a limit ,its the hypocrisy as started in the topic header that they are dropping it to 4km to save lives. no one died doing the extra 6k/hr the 3 mounted speed cameras in my town are all in 50km areas high density with no previous accident history whatsoever ,do you think that is to save lives? most on here don't argue with the original speed limit and 10km amnesty. I've just done 1000 kms in last few days and constant looking down at speedo every 60 secs because it crept up and around that 4km was really tiring distracting and dangerous, I noticed even on the motorway that constant looking at speedo while some sign flashes 80km going thru ngarunga gorge wellington actually causes you to drift around in the lane how is that safe? my brother returned to auckland from Hawkes bay, got to bombay 5hrs,from there to north shore 6 hrs because of some accident, and no it wasn't a 747 that crashed into 4 lanes of traffic like you'd expect. absolute disgrace and arrogance
-
2 pointsNot sure that's true. Policing is not just a service but a business - in order to self fund to an extent. I think they'd lay staff off if they didn't pull in a certain amount of revenue on the roads. They'd simply say the requirement for the current level of policing has dropped so less staff required. They would not divert that resource to other criminal avenues.

2 pointsApologies - it's been a while since I've done a proper update. Let's see if I can recall everything. (I'll edit and add pics where possible later, if necessary.) Cabin fan 'hedgehog' resistor replacement. Oil changes. <sigh> EGR delete, including thermostat, cooler, and fitting blanking plug on exhaust manifold. Swirl flap blanking plug install. Intake clean and refresh. Air filter replacement. Crankshaft pulley/damper replacement, including serpentine belt replacement. To do: Turbo and downpipe replacement - will wait for the next oil change. Transmission fluid and filter change. Rear cat delete? Towbar and electrics. Tidy bodywork Front wheel bearing replacement (both sides) Front bottom outer balljoint replacement (both sides) Current mileage - a whisker under 300000 miles.

2 pointsHey all, I have Nitto Invos on the RS4 (they came with it). They seem to be a pretty solid tyre but nothing amazing. I did one track day on them and they were definitely the limiting factor, but then that's usually the case for road tyres. One thing I wondered about them... their grooves toward the outside of the tyre are quite thin and shallow, so I wonder if they'll get pinged early at a WoF. A couple of peeps have mentioned Eagle F1s, but it's important to know there is more than one type. My pick of the bunch is the GSD3s. I ran them on my VR-4 years ago and found them to be a very good all rounder, although fairly high wear rate. They also pick up stones like nobody's business. Another honourable mention is the Yokohama Advan AD08Rs. I understand they're the pick of the bunch for the NZ Superlaps guys who run in the street tyre class. Almost as good as a dot rated tyre around the track apparently. And that's everything I know about tyres. James :-) Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

2 pointsI'm surprised at that figure. I'm not (yet!) disputing it, and accept that speed can be and is often a contributing factor - let's face it, if no-one was moving (zero speed) then there'd be no accidents. In order to keep this on topic we need to consider 'inappropriate speed' distinctly from 'speeding.' The hard and fast argument stands - don't exceed the speed limit and you're very unlikely to be stopped for speeding. However, would this actually reduce the number of accidents on the roads? Research suggests the answer is maybe, and only very, very slightly. The war on speed is a visible and public way for the police to be seen to be doing something, while filling government coffers. Like the speed limit, it is arbitrary rather than an application of research and fact.

1 pointif it was me i would contact my insurance company, also involve the police with details of your side of the story and any evidence to support this. Definitely act now and do what you can. Also i wouldnt bother contacting the husband, they obviously are going to try twist the story - no point talking to them. Also as a general rule of thumb in ALL accidents, I do the following: - take photo of damage to both cars - take photo of numberplate of other vehicle and rego sticker - get a copy of the drivers drivers license - and importantly i get the driver to admit that it was their fault (if it was their fault) while recording a video on my phone. If they dont want to then I will call the police immediately and make sure that they dont drive off and get a full police report done. Alternatively if ambulance show up then they can also write up a simple accident report too.
-
1 pointunless it wasn't a holiday? in which case they wouldn't have been speeding at all ,DOH so if we cancel all holidays the road toll will be fantastically low and we will all live happily ever after
-
1 pointSo - head on collision you say: Is SPEED the cause of the death, or is that someone in ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD? What is the CAUSE? Well, if the speeds were less, the accident may be "less fatal", maybe avoided even. However, if that speed was then under the speed limit, "Speeding" is not a cause, but "Speed" maybe (as in not suitable for the conditions). Having said all that, if one car was NOT on the wrong side of the road, what would the RESULT be? NO ACCIDENT, so what was the CAUSE of the accident? A head-on accident is CAUSED by someone being where they shouldn't, either by loss of control, or by choosing to do it. The speed limit, and the vehicle speed are not really relevant, because the driver did it WRONG.
-
1 pointin my view, the root cause of all crashes are stupid idiot people. speed is just a byproduct of this. you can kill someone going at slower speeds i.e. 40km/h you can easily have an accident going 80 - 100km/h (with bald tires / distractions etc) falling asleep on the wheel can get you killed at any speed. having unbuckled kids / people in the car a few months ago i saw a car right in front of me got T boned at an intersection running the red light. He was going no faster than 50 - 60km crossing that intersection and the car that hit him was going roughly the same. in conclusions: idiots, the lack of education and lack/lapse of judgement is what kills. who here honestly believes that we get the driving education we need by just passing our restricted / full licenses?
-
1 pointThat was interesting, just read the motorcycle crash data. I assume car data is similar in the way that it's always the drivers fault (or another driver). Road conditions aren't considered at all. The crash I saw happen the other week that involved 3 motorcyclists go off the road would probably come under "motorcyclist veered off road / lost control" no mention of or taking into account the tar bleed and gravel all over the road mid corner on a blind corner.

1 pointHello All, Most people call me Bear, and I have a 1986 325i 4 door that I have had since August 2013. I joined bimmersport.co.nz at the same time but never posted an intro, or made use of the site. The car, which I call Nigella (yes, after Lawson), was cheap and needed work to get a WoF. I have always admired the E30 so I bought the car. It didn't need much to get legal, but in that first six months of ownership I'm sure it spent more time at the mechanics than my drive. It was definitely a love/hate relationship to begin with. In the following March, I stored the car at my mum's farm and took off overseas for nearly two years. My mum decided she liked the car so much she started to use it while I was gone, kept the WoF up to date and made sure it was hunky dory for my eventual return. The car is currently stock standard, and that is pretty much how it is going to stay. The only change I would like to make is the auto to manual conversion. I'm sure one day I'll get around to doing the switch, once I have made the rest of the car hum like it should that is. Anyway I'm back in NZ now and if you're currently in Wellington and you see/hear an E30 whistle past with a vacuum leak, it is more than likely me. Give us a wave! Cheers Everyone! Bear Ps. Not necessarily to greatest image to show off the car, but it's the one I like most
-
1 pointyou said it yourself - whilst regurgitating the party line - contributing factors. ask: what was the cause? stop drinking the koolaid, ask the questions.
-
1 pointSpeed is a FACTOR in all crashes It is not a CAUSE, it's a consequence of poor decision making at the time of driving, choice of tyres etc.
-
1 pointits a great car. really amazing all round in terms of power, comfort, rear wheel drive, torque. and they are pretty cheap now too! im talking about the 370gt lol
-
1 pointNice one man. I saw this there and sat in it. Driver's seat felt tighter than mine! I love the colour.
-
1 pointVanos isn't too bad to rebuild and doesn't have a catastrophic failure like the e46. For what he states as being one of the tidiest in NZ it should be running on all 6, but probably something simple as new plugs or coils
-
1 pointPeople need to stop saying "speed" or "speeding" because it's meaningless and just dumb really. What is "speeding"? It's certainly not +/-4km/h or even 10km/h. I feel like I'm "speeding" (read: going really fast) at about 160, certainly not 120. So in my mind "speeding" is just useless terminology. Thus renders the last few pages of this thread a bit rubbish. I regularly drove at 140km/h+, often 160km/h+ when living in Europe and driving in Germany. Didn't seem to have any problems with "speed". "Speed" is absolutely *not* a cause of 30% of accidents, that's bullshit. *Excessive* speed possibly is. Excessive "speed" is probably +40km/h beyond what the conditions permit. Which means most "speeding" statistics here are total bs.

1 pointThis one? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-1010980782.htm For kms and condition it looks like not a bad price. I'd be asking to see service/ maintainence records since there's not much info. But are generally pretty robust apart from the usual e36 issues. having only driven my e36 m3 I couldn't compare it to an e46, but I'm sure someone will help there

1 pointWelcome, Bear! Nice E30 you have, how's the body (rust)? I got mine totally stock too, and have only changed the wheels to OEM 15inch basketweaves. They're nice wheels. Maybe worth looking into. There's a meet coming up too http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/54877-coffee-and-chin-wag-the-bach-cafe-sun-17th-january/ If you get a wave from a white E30, that's me! you've got a minter of a surname Edit: Looks like you've already got some weaves. 14's?
-
1 pointVery true. The flipside is the "why?" behind 100km/h... Speeds between 56 and 65 mph have been shown to be the speeds at which a driver is most likely to doze off behind the wheel. 100km/h sits in the middle, at just over 62mph. As such, one argument for road safety would be to either reduce or increase the national speed limit.

1 pointFor those of you that think speeding fines are just revenue gathering, there is a trick you can do so they dont gather any revenue. Just dont break the law. Simple.

1 pointThis morning, a police motorcyclist was parked hidden by one of the bridge piers on SH1, northbound, between Alfriston and the Manukau exit. I thought the role of the police was to prevent crime, not catch someone who had just committed an offence?
-
1 pointYes exactly why I have gone " out of fashion" going to a more track orientated setup.

1 pointDrove my E38 to Tauranga, currently here, on the back of Rivesdale (40 mins out of Masterton on the coast ) and back to wellington over new year, and ECC meet and back last month, Also run to auckland and back some stage this week done over 2500km in it in the last month, 3000 by the time i get back. Such a nice car to drive! Scruffy around the edges etc but runs and drives well. Definately recommend looking at an E38 or E39 if you want a cheap hack, they are the ideal car for a BMW enthusiest, basic engines for self servicing, while also having the luxuries you need and want without over complicating things
